Hi,
I am a newbie, but after reading almost every single thread here I have to start by expressing that this is a fantastic forum with lots of helpful stuff.
I just bought a 95 Grand Cherokee V8 Limited with automatic and 4WD. It seems I am either too stupid to operate that 4WD shift lever or it really is stuck.
I've really read the operator manual and many threads here, but din't find anything about it.
I've got the one with 3 positions (4-high, N and 4-lo). Right now that level is on the 4-high position and the car is running fine in that position. However since I am planning to tow a trailer i thought I may need the 4-lo.
I once drove another Grand Cherokee model 95 with I guess what they call Quadra-Trac (?) and i remember i could easily pull that lever into a different position. Not with mine. It seems to be "stuck". I can move the lever to the right, but I can not pull it from its top position (4-high) through N into 4-lo.
The only information I've found out from the operator manual is that shifting shall not be done at higher speeds. Well I was trying while standing, being in "P", being in "N" being in "D": I just can not get it changed. This is driving me nuts. Do I have to push the brakes or doing another secret trick like burning a witch at midnight?

Again this is my first 4WD and this is really a newbie question, I hope there is a simple answer.Any information would really be apreciated.

thanks

Hi Dale. Wow, that was a fast answer and from the master of jeep himself. Thx. :-)

The manual and the animation define the procedure as follows:
" 4-Lo...To engage, slow down to 2-3mph, shift the transmission into Neutral (N)then shift the transfer case lever firmly and quickly to Lo without pausing in transfer case Neutral"
I’ve been trying last night over and over again following the above instructions. Still stuck.
The previous owner said he did not use it for during the last two years as he never was off-road but he had tried it successfully 2 years ago.
As far as I know that thing is fully mechanic, isn’t it?
Any recommendation?

thx

THANKS

OK. I made some more tests, after somebody said: " you have to pull that level a little bit harder".
Here is what I did.

- Put the transmission into D (DRIVE)
- While rolling at 5-10mph switch transmission to N "Neutral"
- Being still in Neutral speeding down to 2-3 mph
- Trying to pull 4WD lever towards me with quite some power while still rolling
-> NOTHING ! :-( I can not move that lever.

I've never heard of anything like that before.
Dale was so nice to point me to the link on the web site where the operation of the Quadra Trac is animated with instructions how to switch. However it does not work on mine. I hope Dale has an idea what could be wrong. Otherwise I will have to find that witch to be burned..

every idea will be greatly appreciated,
thanks

Well the good news is that unless your a hard core 4 wheeler you most likely wont need the feature. its like a super low gear for climbing staight up and you really cant use it for towing a trailer other that getting a boat out of a launch area, your top speed is limited to like 35 mph if is in low.

It does soud like the linkage is jammed somehow. If its that imprtant you might try disconnecting the linkage and operating it manually, it should function with the key on engine off transemission in neutral.

the linkage should move freely if diconnected.

Thanks a lot, Leowolf.
It was the linckage. In fact it was rosted together.
I disconnected the shift lever rod and I still couldn't move the lever.
Then I disconnected the lever from the selector rod and trunnion by opening the trunnion bolt.
Result: the lever alone was moving! So it had to be the rest: the selector rod together with the torque shaft were STUCK in the frame bucket!
I put lots of anti rost and then I had to force it a bit. It started to maove and I finally put lots of grease on it.
Now it's moving !!! :-)
I readjusted the trunnion and there we go !
Finally I used the procedure that Dale was hinting me to and it worked fine. Well it made a bit of a sound when switching but it works !!

One thing I can suggest to everybody: don't leave that Lever switch in one position for years ;-)

Thanks again to you Leowolf and of course to Dale.
You were of great help.

Had the same problem after I reinstalled my engine the shift lever became lodged. I fixed it and it works fine. Might I suggest to anyone with 4WD and this is my 3rd 4WD Jeep run your transfer case (shift into 4WD) every couple of months. And drive it that way for a little while. Terrible on gas but keeps that parts working. I shift my Select Trac T-Case into Full-Time 4WD HI every 2-3 months even if I don't take it off road. I just want to make sure that everything is working so when i need it I have it. Hope this helps and good luck with your Jeeping.
