Replace the plugs if necessary and clean the injectors. Knocking sound could be anything.

You might have a misfire and/or timing issue.

I would first check each plug and wire for consistent spark.

If you need the procedure for setting and adjusting timing for a Gen2 Camry, you can get it here:

Gen2Camry Reference Board (http://gen2camry.proboards26.com/index.cgi?board=Maintenance&action=display&num=1073653372)

Good luck...

I put my money on a plug wire. Either its not on the plug or its tits/up.

try when engine running(with isolated pliers)remove one spark plug lead at the time and note the difference in engine note,if when a lead is removed it makes no difference, thats where the problem lies.could be firing across 2 cyls.-head gasket/leads/cap.my moneys on head gasket.

I pulled away from a stop light 3 years ago in my 87 Camry and it took 3 miles to get up to 50 mph. It would idle but shook and bucked like hell. Took me 45 minutes to drive 20 miles. I got home and eventually found the timing was retarded 40 degrees. The timing belt had lost two teeth and slipped. It took me 3 days to change. Now it takes me 3 hours. Might be your problem.
