Rubbing noise coming from rearend 99JGC79batmobile 06-03-2004, 12:08 PM This isn't my car. It's my girlfriends and I'm getting tired of the complaining about the noise. It sounds like it is coming from the rear end and only happens when you turn the vehicle. It sounds like a rubbing noise (imagine chewbacca sitting in your back seat). I think it could be that the gear lube in the rear is past it's change date so I was going to go ahead and change it. But before I did I just wanted to see if this was a common problem involving something else. All I can say right now is it's getting worse and more irritating for her and me. She took it to the dealership to get a 60,000 mile tuneup but I know the place she took it and it sucks sideways so I doubt they changed the oil in the rear or anything else for that matter besides charge her $400. She then took it in to get this specicfic problem fixed (yes to the same place, she doesn't listen) and they said she needed to have the steering stops lubricated which was not even the right end of the vehicle. Anyway, I've rambled enough. Any help will be greatly apprecaited. twojags 06-10-2004, 03:55 AM I Have The Same Problem, Did You Get It Fixed? What Was It? Charles 79batmobile 06-10-2004, 08:35 AM It's finally fixed....for the moment. My girlfriend took her truck in the other day because she was tired of the noise. They told her it was her rear brakes. They said they replace both rotors in the back and the brake pads. They also said they replaced one of the rear hubs, but that was a little vague so I'm not sure what to tell you there. I'm assuming by hub they meant the rotor plus the parking brake setup also. But I'm not sure so don't quote me on that. By the way it also cost around $400. Which wasn't pleasant. But the noise is gone. Hopefully that helped you some. 79batmobile 06-11-2004, 11:08 AM Nevermind that last post. It's not fixed. It's still making that noise even after the brake and hub change. The mechanic also said that Jeeps have a tendency to make noises that take a while to figure out. A friend thinks it may be the differential. Perhaps the viscosity of the rear end lube is affecting the posi clutches. That would makes sense since the noise only happens when you turn and that would be when the posi cluthces start slipping to allow for the differences in wheel speed. So I may do that bit of maintenance for her or maybe she will take pity on me and the fact that I am currently working on two other cars and hopefully she won't add a third. If anyone has any advice on what else to look at that would be great Thanks barukiba 08-04-2004, 10:43 PM This isn't my car. Anyway, I've rambled enough. Any help will be greatly apprecaited. I know exactly what the noise is you're hearing. I had the same issue and had it fixed by the Jeep dealership. They simply replaced all the fluids in the rear differentials and added a special additive which is specifically formulated for towing. I don't tow, but it worked. Two days after having these fluids replaced the additive worked itself in and the noise has never come back. Ask you Jeep dealer about this additive as I don't know what the name is, but it definately works! JDPascal 08-05-2004, 01:26 AM The additive is for limited slip differentials. It costs around $10 if you buy it your self. I did a diff oil change on my JGC - put in mobile 1 and added 1/2 the amount of the additive in the bottle that that chrylser sold me. The wheel fight is gone when I turn a corner. I never had a what I would call a grinding sound but every thing is SMOOOOTH now. you should be able to add it yourself. No point in giving the bandits more of your hard earned cash than you have to. Besides - if it works, you get the brownie points. Lord knows we need all of those we can get too. JD hoggman 10-07-2004, 06:55 PM Hi everybody, nooby here! From what I've read this also sounds like it could be a problem with the VC (inside transfer case). Hopping/jumping round corners. I've had these syptoms a couple of times . Also I've had grinding from where I think is the rear diff. This only happens after a long run - 45 mins or so - when pulling away from a standstill. It lasts 5 to 10 mins then all is fine. Gonna do a bit more searching to see if this is related to the VC. I'm hoping it's just my rear pads but I doubt it. Maybe a trip to the stealership! Any ideas gratefully appreciated. Myrtle Beach 10-08-2004, 10:24 AM If you have a WJ, 99-04 Grand than your vehichle doesn't have a VC. hoggman 10-08-2004, 10:44 AM Mines a 97, sorry to sound stupid, but I don't know what WJ means, I have seen these abbreviations and assume they refer to the model of jeep. But anyhow, I've got a 97 Grand Cherokee Ltd so does that mean I have got a VC, and if so could this be the problem. I did try a few sharp RH turns today and I haven't fot any skipping, jumping so chances are it's something else, local stealership have no idea. I got the impression they were annoyed because I knew what a VC was!!! Thanks in advance for any response. dksob81 10-08-2004, 10:56 AM well ur jeep is a ZJ. and yes u have classic symptoms of a lockd up Viscous Coupling. email me, and I will explain more Joe dksob81@hotmail.com vBulletin®, Copyright ©2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
