Fueling problems

My 1999 Solara is giving me grief at the gas pump and I'm not just talking about the price of gas! The pump cuts off every gallon or so - so it is taking me forever to fill the tank. I am the original owner and the car only has 20,000 miles on it. I'm wondering if any other Solara owners (or Toyota owners) are experiencing this (defect?) or if it's just one of those things...... any comments on this topic would be appreciated. Thanks. Kathy

Have you tried to go to different pumps/stations? If so, does the car still do this?

Yes, thanks for posting! That was the first thing I did, thinking the pump was broken - even went to different STATES! ;-)

i'm not sure but I would look for an overflow tubejust below the "filling hole".My TOY truck has one.Maybe it's clogged.Maybe a cockroach crawled in there and died.Well, that's where I would look anyway. Good Luck

Hi, I have a '98 Camry with the exact problem. It just started about 6 weeks ago and happens at every station I go to. Sometimes the station attendant will turn the pump handel upside down. It works better. I live in NJ where they use a recovery type of nozzle. I called the Toyota dealer and they want me to bring it in. I'm going to try and see if the overflow tube is clogged. I'll keep you posted. Thanks.

Hello,

Well, I called the toyota service and the first thing the guy said was it may the charcoal filter $400 bucks. I only have 50K miles on the solora and thought this was extreme. So i took it to my local service shop. They noticed that the metal flap at the gas inlet was missing. They think this is part of the gas venting system. A new gas tube was ordered $150 bucks. Will keep thread informed.

Went to Toyota dealer and he charged me $92.50 to diagnose problem which is their hourly rate. The bad news is that it is the shut off valves in the gas tank which needs to be replaced with gaskets. Total for the repair is $476 (mostly labor) but he will deduct the $92.50 and give me a loaner. I'm waiting for parts but may go to my corner garage for an estimate but still be out the 92.
