cool, thanks. i talked to the dealer and he said it was the gas cap being loose. tighten and drive 2 - 20 mile cycles. if that doesnt fix it, how could i test for the other things you said it could be?

to test rest of problem (if they exist) you can take your car to dealer and have them to figure out the problem, or you buy service manual and do it yourself.
service manual should be this one, it's $40 on ebay (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=7903084075&category=34223)

 Why would you want to remove gas tank?
All components that need to be tested (if need to be) don’t located in gas tank.
Gas tank has only fuel pump and fuel level sending unit, which can be tested without removing tank, they even can be replaced without removing gas tank.
