FIPK *and* throttle body spacer

Has anyone installed BOTH a K&N FIPK air intake *and* a throttle body spacer?
I have an '01 Yukon XL Denali with the 6.0 L Vortec. I just don't have the clearance to the fan blades to accomodate both mods. The Street and Performance Helix Power Tower adds a full inch to the throttle body thereby pushing the KN intake tube into the fan blades.
Any suggestions? Should I look at a different throttle body spacer? Trim the fan blades? Get a different fan blade assembly? or forget the TB spacer altogether?
Thanks for your input

Are you sure it's gonna hit the fan blades? I think there's enough clearance if you just trim the fan shroud with a Dremel.
There are arguments that TBS's are a bunch of BS. I haven't seen anything to convince me that they do work IMO.

Thanks for your input. I've heard both sides of the argument on TBS's. Yes, it will definitely hit the fan blades. I trimmed the fan shroud then mated the TBS with the TB then held the air intake up to the TBS, the air intake WILL be chopped up by the fan. A friend suggested that I cut an inch off the TB side of the air intake tube, and that might work. At this point I am rethinking the TBS and considering a Hypertech unit instead.
Anyone have experience with the Hypertech, or recommendations?

Hi digidavid, I have an 01 Yukon XL 2500 with the 6.0 liter engine.
I completely agree :iagree: with ignoring the spacer :screwy: and going with a programmer :boink: instead.
The spacer MAY give a little better atomization, the programmer will take advantage of the higher octane fuel, allowing for more power.
Here is what I have ordered as I will do some heavy towing:
1) K&N FIPK
2) Superchips Microtuner Chip - you need the 2715 -
This one has a towing tune, a performance tune, and an 87 octane tune.
I got it for the towing one, it also does not need a low temp thermostat.
Got it from ebay for $350, the guy has more...
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&tc=photo&item=2479905917&category=335973
3) Flowmaster free flow muffler with dual exhaust pipes, $375 installed at my local muffler shop.
Hope this helps, take care, Eggert :bananasmi

Thanks for the tip. Wow! What HP and Torque are you pushing now? Have you looked at your gas mileage in each of the three modes?

Hi, I don't have the stuff yet.
Muffler goes in tomorrow, K&N should be here, too. Programmer comes next week.
Looking at the dyno examples on the superchips and hypertech web sites, I should be almost halfway between the stock 6.0 liter and the stock 8.1 liter engine.
May be a 5% to 10% increase? (I hope).
It seems that the Yukon XL 2500 chassis, brakes, etc. are the same for both engines.
The 6.0 liter tows 10,000lbs, the 8.1 liter tows 12,000lbs-both with the 4.10 rear end.
I just want some cushion in the performance department and not become a road block when towing close to 10,000lbs.
Any comment/correction is appreciated.

I sincerely doubt your 6 liter will even break a sweat. I am interested in your final results, don't forget to post.

From everything I've heard, I have to agree - you'll be fine. Those are great mods, by the way. I've heard great things about the programmer in towing situations, namely the benefits gained from improved shift points. In daily driving you may not notice much in the way of performance gains, but under load, I think you'll be pleased.

hey guys,
I have a 99 Denali , I do not know much about cars but I am really starting to get in to hooking my truck up, so far i added the 20's, a billiet grill, the billet grill GMC emblem, flowmaster with duel exhaust.
Can you tell me what the FIPK and that programer would do for my truck, and are they worth getting? also I dont know if you can do this but I would like to make the rear of the truck a little higher then the front, not much just a little like the new denali look. how would i go about doing this, and would it mess up the front end?
One more thing :screwy: sorry, I would like to also add one of those Cowl hoods. anyone know where I might be able to look at a few on the web and maybe order one.
Thanks for any info you can give.
Van.

The FIPK will provide better intake airflow. It'll offer a mild increase in performance and a very nice sound - more like a sports car than a wheezing old man. It works very well with the exhaust mod you've already made.
The programmer? It makes some fuel mapping changes, along with transmission shift point changes that may or may not provide a noticeable performance increase.
Not too strong on the other mods you're after. I'd recommend a visit to belltech.com, groundforce.com, and eibach.com, along with a general web search on "suspension lift kit" or some other verbiage. You also may consider whether dropping the front end a little bit might offer the same look. I don't know the specs on your truck, but if you have torsion bars, the drop could be acheived by loosening the bars - aligning the front end immediately afterward.
Finally, same recommendation on the hood, although places like stylinconcepts.com and streetbeatcustoms.com often carry hoods. Good luck!

Jerry

are FIPK hard to install? could I do it my self or should I have a shop install it?
And the Programer is that hard to do? or does it do it all on its own?
Thanks.

The FIPK is a pretty easy install. You may want to shop around a bit. I'm very happy with my K&N, but Volant makes a kit that is really attractive. On my install the only bit of difficulty involved trimming the fan shroud a little bit to cure it from rubbing against the intake tube.
The programmer is even easier, although it is slow. I'd really recommend doing some research on this mod. I have yet to hear any positive feedback except from those that tow on a regular basis. If you're looking for some oomph, you may want to consider some other options. Personally, I went with a Westers PCM. It's awesome - I'm convinced it's the biggest performance leap I could've made short of a supercharger.
