There was one message that I found like my problem, but a little different. When I turn the key it won't start, just sounds like it is going to start. I turn the key the second time it will usually start. sometimes it takes 3 times. Any ideas?

and fuel filter...
also, make sure your throttle body is clean (you can clean it out real well with carb cleaner) - it it's gunked up, it can be adding to your problem...

Those jeeps have a lot of problems with the fuel pump losing pressure. Is this problem after the vehichle sits? I have already replaced two fuel pumpson my 99 Jeep grand cherokee- It has 90k on the odometer. It sounds like the problem I was having-Good luck

I have a 97 GC Laredo which will crank for 5 seconds then turn over, like clockwork, every time I start it. Is this the same problem you had when your fuel pump went bad? I just replaced the Crank Shaft Position sensor, with no results, and am looking into trying the Cam saft sensor. It will start easily if I just ran it. So I am now thinking that I am loosing pressure while it sits. Is it safe to assume my fuel pump is failing and bleeding back into the tank as it sits? Also if i depress the fuel pressure check valve, should gas squirt out when it is not running and has been sitting? I get a little gargle of air and gas thats it. Any help on the matter would be greatly appreciated.

I have been cruising these forums for a while now, there was one post that seems likely to fit your problem and seems likely to me. your oil filter though doing a good job of filtering does not have the required check valve in it.the check valve maintains a positive pressure on the oil sending unit. there is an oil pressure limit switch in the starter circuit, this is just hear say, but it seemed likly to me.

I have the exact same problem word for word. Did you find what the problem finally was? Thanks -John

OK it finally clicked, check the Ignition switch. Try this, once the car is running turn the ignition switch gently within the "on" indent. See if the car stalls. If so the igniton switch may be coming apart or have a dead spot. this happend on one of my mercury's.

Where is the test valve located. Also, I noticed if I turn the key but don't start it three or four times, the car starts up. This sounds like fuel pressure problem. So should I replace the fuel filter, fuel pressure regulator or the fuel pump or all three. Thanks again for your help. -John

HI, YOU WOULD BE BETTER OFF IF YOU CAN HAVE FUEL PRESSURE CHECKED WITH A PRESSURE GAUGE, THEN YOU CAN TELL IF YOU'RE GETTING THE RIGHT PRESSURE AND YOU CAN CHECK TO SEE IF YOU HAVE BLEED OFF AFTER YOU TURN KEY OFF. THE TEST VALVE IS THE STEEL FITTING THAT LOOKS LIKE THE ONE ON A TIRE ONLY STEEL. SHOULD BE ON FUEL RAIL IN FRONT OF THE THROTTLEBODY, USE A RAG AND BE CAREFUL DALE jeepman600@aol.com

i think there is a tsb for this problem. not sure what years it was though I know is was for a grand cherokee.. the fix was to replace a seal/oring in the fuel pump check valve!!

My 99 does this too; replacing the fuel pump only worked for a week or two, so I wouldn't try that just yet. From what I've heard, it's a seal problem. The gas leftover in the engine (from the last time it was on) usually helps start it. Because of the leak... the fuel pump has to replace what leaked out, in addition to the normal amount, before it starts... thus, longer cranking time. This is why you only have the problem after it's been off for a while.


I was actually looking to fix this exact problem, so I don't know what works yet. I'll start with the seal/oring in the fuel pump check valve and let you know what works.

I have a JGC 2000 4.0 Straight 6.

I have this problem also.

This is what I have done so far.
Replace fuel filter with what I think is an aftermarket brand.
Replaced the fuel pump twice, first time with a used one, second time with a new OEM, I got from O'Ralleys. (Yes they sale the OEM for about half what you would pay at the dealership.)
Replace the crank shaft position sensor.
Replaced the cam shaft position sensor.

I still have the exact problem you discribe but I also have an occasional stumble when steping on the gas sometimes but not always.

I guess my next step will be go to the dealership and just bite the bullet.

i have had delayed starting problems but all have been associated with the fuel pump losing pressure. I have already had two replaced and it fixed the problem each time (at least for 20-25k miles). Hope this link helps!

My 2001 Gr. Cherokee Ltd. has been doing the exact same thing for about 3 weeks. Have you found any solutions??

I haven't found the problem yet but after replace all the parts I have described I have a new check engine code of "System too Lean"

OK, I do believe since u said "it sometimes stumbles when I give it gas", I deffinately think this is the fuel pump, I would have it checked again, b/c what happens when u give it gas the Engine is drawing in AIR but not enough Fuel to give it the FUEL to AIR ratio it requires to run.

it may also be the fuel pump realy.
