Hello. I have a 93 JGC limited with the 5.2 MFI V8 Auto 98k miles. I have had a slight leak from the tranny pan. I checked it often, and was ready to replace gasket/filter this weekend. After some mild 4-wheeling Friday, I noticed that it seemed to "slip" a little. When I am at a complete stop, it takes a little more pedal before it engaged. I figured I would check it out when I got home. I stopped at my friends for 5min, and noticed a huge puddle coming from tranny. I rushed the mile home, crawled under there, and it was coming from where the tranny bolts to the actual engine. I was going to check the fluid, started it, put it in neutral, and it just started pouring. Do I need a whole new tranny, or just the seal between the gears and the input shaft(Main seal??) Thanks for ALL your advice, REALLY appreciated.

i would start with a seal it much cheaper than a trany. Also look at the pump houseing and torque converter hub for wear but most cases it is just the seal

There was an unusual amount coming from around the starter/pump housing area. If there is wear around them, should I just buy a rtv high temp seal from checker and go around the ousides of both sides? This was worrying me because I work on a lot of cars w/manual tranny's, and there shouldn't even be fluid coming from between the tranny where it bolts to the engine. Is this okay?
Thank you VERY much!

Ok my ZJ started leaking awhile ago out of the front of the housing. Now I had checked out to see that it was a front seal leak but that was a theory. With my 1998 5.2 V8 ZJ, the whole tranny has to be taken out to see the problem. So here in FL that starts at about $200! So I had a new re-seal done which includes all seals in the housing. Then two months later it was leaking again. Same procedure taking it out but this time it was a worn torque converter. So this time all I had to pay for was the new-rebuilt converter because you can't get 'em new. Good luck with yours. When you have taken out and if you haven't any service on it, you should have it all checked.

So there is supposed to be fluid actually in the front housing?

Nobody knows??? I found a little ding that separated the spot where the transmission goes into the engine, is the leak coming from here? If there is supposed to be fluid in the front housing, I just need to redo a gasket there, but if not, I will have to take the whole thing out and check it, so please help.

Is there supposed to be fluid in the front housing of the tranny where it bolts to the engine??
