Just finished removing my manual transmission/engine as a unit and got the transmission off.
It has 189,000 on it and I need a clutch as well as CV joints, bought the car when it has 129,000 on it and rebuilt the engine- clutch was okay.
Now it slips and when I got it apart the forks the throwout bearing depresses are worn to almost razor thinness at the ends.

So I started looking the transmission over a little, need a snap ring plier to get the two rings off to get the case fully apart, meanwhile I found a couple of small pieces of metal loose and took a bit to figure out what they were and they were part of the little riveted retainer on a ball bearing race.

The transmission worked ok other than some initial grinding when putting it in reverse at times.

So with the two issues there and the mileage, I figured as long as it's all out I might as well look into replacing the seals, bearings, synchronizers, worn gears and other parts, is there some kind of master rebuild kit available that would include all this?

The haynes book shows a lot of the transmission details along with specs and checking clearances with feeler gauges etc but I figured if a master rebuild kit was bought it would include those parts and then I won't bother checking all that stuff with feelers.

I noticed the splines on one shaft visible on the outside with the 5th gear housing removed- the main I believe, seem a little worn, so no doubt I am looking at a number of worn parts and maybe it's better to replace the bunch of them (gears, synchronizers, bearings, spacers) so they are all new as a unit.

Any idea why the bearing retainer would come apart?

How about the grinding trying to get it in reverse if the RPM's are a little high (like when cold on a fast idle) any clue what causes that?
