Braking System, Need Help

About 3 or so months ago i was pulling out of a parking lot and as soon as i went in to drive my front brakes just locked up. i put it in park then then went back to drive and it started going then i just turned out in to the street and soon as i tapped the brakes they locked up again and i had to keep pressing on the gas causing my brakes to squeel to get off the road. my abs brake light was on the whole time. i then turned off the car then turned it back on and it worked again. i havent had the same thing happen again but the system just doesnt seem to act normal. i took it into the dealership and asked about it and he said its probably some sensor or somethin electrical but he priced the whole job at $2400. I didnt bother with that but now when i drive it still acts funny. When ive been driving for a while and im going at a slow speed like in a parking lot or somehting it seems to kick alot and the brakes seem like there grabbing for a sec. the abs light has come on a few times then goes off other times. it doesnt drive smooth at all at low speeds. i dunno what this means. please right me back if u know whats up.

The first thing I would do is pull all 4 wheels and verify the condition of the rotors and pads.

While the wheels are off check to make sure the brakes are applying and releasing correctly

locate the ABS sensors and check them for mud and other problems.

if these are all ok, you'll have to go deeper.

go for it

sound to me like ur abs pump is bad, which is not a cheap repair, but then again I agreee with JD check the ABS Sensors.

yup, check the wheel speed sensors, you will find one in the differential if its anything like ford and on on each front wheel behind the rotors. fords go bad in the differential a lot! i would start there.

Here are two links to order these parts on line for your 1997 jeep gcl, just copy them into your browser:

Did the dealer scan the abs system? What year and what were the codes? Is your abs light come on all the time or only when u drive. It does sound like your Modulator is bad.
