Traffic, downshifting and temp question

Ive been driving in traffic and i heard someone say that the correct way to downshift is to double clutch (i dont really know what that is that much) or rev it to the rpm in the gear u will downshift. NEway, ive wondering about this because my cars tempature keeps getting way hot, and i dont even stress the engine, so could it be the my shifting sucks, or could it be the fan? Once the car gets to the limit it cools off like nothing right away. Anybody know what could be going on? And is there a correct way to downshift?

you should come by maybe i can help ya out with. Have you ever changed the radiator fluids and stuff like that?

whoever told you to "double clutch" for downshifting deserves to be trampled by a herd of elephants. Seriously, that person is an idiot. Flush your cooling system.

johnnyboy5

yeah, i flushed out the radiator and put new fluid in there and even the reservoir is full.

make sure your fan is working properly also then. run it at normal temperature for awhile and then pull over and pop the hood. make sure the fan is on. check the thermostat as well.

ok then
now what about downshifting, is there really a correct way to downshift or not?

There are different ways to downshift depending on what driving situation you're in. For regular driving in traffic I would just stay in whatever gear you happen to be in until RPM's reach about 1800-1500 then just clutch and put it in neutral. Use your brakes to slow down, seeing as how brake pads are easier to replace that a clutch. If you're on the brakes coming to a corner while on the track, you keep your toe on the brake pedal while using the heel or side of your foot to tap the gas pedal. This is called heel-toe downshifting and is meant to accomplish something most people call "rev matching". Try driving in your car in third gear at about 30mph then push in the clutch and put it in second. Take your foot off of the gas pedal and once your RPM's reach idle let off of the clutch and you'll notice a sort of dragging which will tend to make you lean forward. When you rev match you are using throttle while the clutch is in to get the engine RPM's to the same number (say 3500 rpms) while clutched as they will be when you release the clutch. This will get rid of the dragging feeling you experienced in my third gear 30mph example. Sorry if this doesn't make sense I'm on lunch break so I'm in a hurry, plus I'm watching Law&Order at the same time. Anyhow, hope that helps.

ok then
now what about downshifting, is there really a correct way to downshift or not?

Depress the clutch pedal, move the shifter, Release the clutch.

For a smoother down shift, raise the tach up about 20% while coasting so that the engine's speed is matched.

Do not downshift in traffic in an emergancy breaking manuver unless your breaks are not responding. If your breaks are not responding Then take to the shoulder,E-brake, downshift and if need be drive into some bushes.

if ur talking regular driving, please dont downshift,

brake pads are much cheaper than trannies

thank u for the information, its because on my way to school there is a lot of stop and go traffic so i try to leave it in one gear when im driving but the traffic slows down and when it goes my car goes very slow and other people cut me off. I guess ill just be patient instead of wasting the clutch.

By the way i think theres a leak i my radiator or a hose because theres a leak of antifreeze and even the reservoir which was full is now empty. Today was scary, the temp went all the way to the max and then it went down to half quickly. Im not driving my car anymore til i find out and fix the problem.

If you ruin ur tranny by downshifting then you rly suck, my dad practically never used the brakes on his 86 Prelude, to slow down he always downshifted in to second then when he was going rly slow hed use the brakes. His original clutch lasted 350,000 kilometers un til he sold the car.

05-31-2004, 08:50 PM
ok then we suck

whoever was asking about it, go ahrad and dont use ur brakes, they are not made for braking, u supposed to use your tranny, it wont go out on u dont worry

Ya, that's it, answer like a fucking four year old. All I'm saying is that you don't need to use your brakes at every stop sign or every red light, if you have some room to downshift and use the decompression to slow down then do it. It won't ruin your clutch and your brakes will last longer.

oh shit all of a sudden u went to class from your previous post, got some aprostophes and shit up in there.

and i never disagreed with u. i agreed, it wont ruin nothing, tranny and clutch will be fine.

did evryone clearly hear? If i ruin my tranny by downshifting, I SUCK, this 16yr olds fathers shit lasted forever, so should mine right? or else i SUCK!

you guys really don't know how to use a clutch LOL

ok heres the deal, the clutch ONLY, and i mean ONLY EVER WEARS when you have your foot on it pushing it in, out, holding it on the floor whatever, thats when it will wear...

just downshift fast and don't keep your foot on the clutch(riding the clutch)when ur slowing down and u know ur comming to a stop or need to downshift to get going again just pop the clutch, put it to nuetral and let it coast. no point in downshifting through all the gears when u can just use the clutch one time and put it in nuetral. when ur stopped keep it in nuetral and at the last second put it in gear and go, don't sit there at a light with it in gear and ur foot down on the clutch.

you can make a clutch last a long ass time if u use it properly, people are always messing with em and hardly ever put it in nuetral when on the road. The less your foot touches the clutch pedal the better, figure out different habits of driving to accomplish that.

Buh, you guys are dumb. I never use my breaks OR my clutch to slow down. Just deploy your drag chute if you need to stop.

Also my dad is cooler than yours because he drove his car and never used the breaks for 500,000 miles on the same clutch! You know this is a fact because I have told you so! >=(

I'm a newb at manual, but the way I slow down when coming to a stop is to just put it in neutral and gently brake to a stop just like I would in an automatic. I'd much rather replace my brakes every 10,000 miles than my clutch every 50,000.

logik23
06-01-2004, 06:43 PM
All you have to do is let off the gas, there will be decompression and the car will tighten up and slow down, then when ur almost stopped then put it in neutral and use the brakes, anyways, you people are all like fucking 5 years old, so whatever.

zdude
06-01-2004, 06:51 PM
ummm...5 year olds cant drive, and wouldnt even know what a tranny, or clutch, or brakes are. so i dont think im 5, cuz i know what those are. i think im a little older...what do you think guys, do you think im older than 5??

I think you use the wrong quote, and yes, I'm 16, so what? I have my driver's license, I drive a manual, and so what if I put down 5 instead of 4, I just took an example about my dad's driving, an example which was true by the way, and its 350,000 KMS not miles, so it's not as much as you all think. I said you're all 4 or 5 or whatever because you all started making jokes about your 12 fathers and uncles driving there car up to 500,000 miles on the original clutch. Sorry if I said you suck, it was a harsh word, but I'm tired of people whinning about having to get a new clutch all the time when they ride the damn thing at red lights and in heavy traffic. Put it in neutral and leave it alone, it'll last much, much longer.

Just tell me one thing, why is it that each time I post, a bunch of people always post a bunch of exagerations and make a mockery of everything I say. Like the 12 fathers and uncles and the 500,000 miles original clutch and the parachutes on my car, what pushes you people to do that? I mean, do you like making fun of people? Are you so cut off from real people that you get your kicks out of putting people down in a car forum? And I'm not talking about one person, it's everyone who posted about there uncles and fathers and whatnot with 500,000 miles on the clutch, and the ones about the prarachute, why can't you just tell me to piss off or something instead of dragging this little thing on for 3 pages? And for the record, in my last post, I took back what I said about someone sucking if they can't slow down without using their brakes right away.

Oh and no one has agreed with me since the beginning. And I thought I had already cleared up the whole 4 year old, 5 year old thing...

I made a serious comment about downshifting to help brake, no one had to do it, but it was there for anyone who wanted to try it to go ahead. What do I get in return? 20 fukcing posts about some guys uncle who got 500,000miles on his damn clutch or some pissed off guy who thought I meant never to use brakes in any situation, ever. And you don't want me to make these long ass posts? Stop responding, it's that simple. But you won't stop because this little feud with me fills that big gaping hole in your social life doesn't it?

When sarcasm is used at one's expense, it usually is the result of the victim making, or having made statements that are either:
A, Obviously exaggerated.
B, Stating gross factual errors.
C, Compare idealistic scenarios to rational ones.
D, Contain spelling and or grammatical errors.

These are probably the most common, however there are many more possibilities. If you are having lots of problems with people responding sarcastically to you, then it is advised you check for any problems and try to correct them to prevent future problems.
