Ok...I'm way confused on this one. Maybe someone can help. I just bought a 91 Camry for 100 bucks. It has a brand new top end and distributor. There are a few pieces missing on the motor like the alternator and some sensor that goes next to the temp sensor. Have no idea but I'll get it. I've been working on cars for a long time now and I've got a problem I've never seen before. When I turn the headlights on all the tail lights come including the brake lights. So basically it looks like I'm riding my brakes. Please, does anyone know what this might be and how to fix it. I thought about the fuses but they're all good. Any help would be great.

There are a few things you can check. The bulbs themselves(proper double or single filament),the wiring harness at the trunk hinge, and the grounds at the lights themselves.

I checked all that just now and its all fine. Do you think maybe its the wrong size fuse?

zulatores,

If the thing next to the temperature sensor has a brown plastic connector floating around it, it is missing what Toyota calls a "cold start time switch". It is what Toyota used to activate the extra (cold start) injector. It senses coolant temperature just like the coolant temp sensor but Toyota choose to use two separate sensors here. The coolant temp sensor feeds info to the main computer and a seperate cold start time switch feeds info only to the cold start injector to get a cold engine started. I'm not sure if the 91's had this but the earlier generation 2's did. I haven't been under the hood of a later generation 2 for a while.

As for your lighting problem, the wiring under the trunk lid on the left side which is constantly subjected to bending up and down as the trunk opens and closes has been a problem area on these cars. I would get hold of a wiring diagram and a test light or a multi-meter and start checking the wiring right there.
