Has anyone had this problem before. All of a sudden there was a rumbling noise coming from the the engine.I got under the egine with the car turned on and could hear the rumbling but couldn't determine where exactly it came from. I think it's an exhaust leak but could be wrong.I believe it's from the first catalic converter up the manifold.Could it be the seals or gaskets where the sections connect? Any suggestion guys?

You can have someone hold a rag over the end of the exhaust while you look (listen) for the leak as it will be much more obvious.

I had a leak in my exhaust (96 camry) with similar symptoms. It was a basketweave looking part in the middle of the exhaust system, part of the pipes. I had it fixed at midas and it wasn't too expensive.

Exhaust leak fixed. The leak did come from the basketweave looking part in the middle of the exhaust system (aka flex pipe). I took out the middle exhaust section and took it to a muffler shop and they installed a new one($60).Thanks for your help on this.

I was also told that I have a leak in the exhaust and the mechanic told me that I need to get the flex pipe changed. He mentioned that they can change a part in the flex pipe or change the entire flex pipe which has the catalytic converter in it. The guy is telling me that just to change a part - whatever that is - it would cost me $150. He is telling me that to change the flex pipe, it would be quite a bit more. Is he bsing me? Please let me know what you think. THanks.

Go to a shop that has a good welder...
The Catalytic is NOT a part of the Flex pipe...
I had mine changed by a local (not Midas) muffler shop for around $60.... Bob
