2002 vr6 Jetta glx coolant question

My jetta has 44,00 miles on it, when I bought it the check coolant light came on, but the fluid looked like it was at a good level, two months later, the warning light came on and the fluid level was seriously low. Granted I have been kinda hot rodding around, the mechanic thought it was bad to have a level so low on a newer car, is this a symptom of something else in the coolant system. I have only had the car for three months and am planning a long road trip. thanks

Have it pressure tested (it takes a fairly special adapter so you may need to use someone familiar w/VW's) & checked for leaks.

turns out one of the fans on the radiator quit, causing the fluid to burn/boil off, the thermostat began dipping into the red zone. 250 to repair.
