Clunky clangy sound from right wheel wellAJ236 05-25-2004, 03:38 PM ANYONE, ANYONE with a Gen 4 Camry ever have a problem with a clangy sound coming from the right front tire area? It sounds metallic, I am guessing at something in the strut tower, but need help before I go crazy and replace everything I can see. mrtwo 05-25-2004, 05:26 PM What is a gen 4 Camry? I have a 95 and it sounds like two pieces of metal pounding each other even when i drive very slow when road is not smooth. Today, a mechanics told me my suspension is ok and i am too sensitive. But it annoys me alot so tomorrow i will take it to another mechanics. Brian R. 05-25-2004, 06:40 PM It is a strut tower problem. Search this forum. mrtwo 05-25-2004, 07:29 PM is it expensive to repair? AJ236 05-25-2004, 10:04 PM Thanks for the answer on the strut tower thing. Also, I too took it to a mechanic a couple of times (same guy-silly me) and he told me it was that the Cat was blown out and the waffle was knocking around inside. How about that one? Gen 4 = 1997-1999 Gen 4.5=2000-2001 minor changes to headlamps, tail-lights, available colors, etc. Brian R. 05-25-2004, 10:34 PM GSS123 05-26-2004, 09:36 AM You may want to change the struts while you have them out to replace the strut towers. The strut towers run $50 - $60 each from Toyota for a 1994 Camry I have no idea about what they would cost for your newer model. mrtwo 05-26-2004, 09:58 AM Thanks. Is it too much to replace two rear struts for $300 for a 95? My mechanics told me i should replace two together due to balance. GSS123 05-26-2004, 10:35 AM It really depends on what kind of replacement strut your mechanic is installing. Factory Toyota struts alone would cost $300 a pair. You will find a lot of opinions on what is the best or right strut to use by doing a search on this forum. Brian R. 05-26-2004, 10:39 AM I would say that you should spend the extra money for the Toyota struts if you are planning to keep the car for a long time. wormhole 05-26-2004, 04:54 PM I had the same problme on 98. It ended up being the strut mounts. I found this out after I replace both front and rear struts. If you replace the struts search the web. I have kyb on the front and they only cost about 150 found at agood price. mrtwo 05-27-2004, 09:43 AM i went to another mechanic, he recommended to replace rear struts, upper mounts and boots and quoted me more than $600. lol. Also he found the outer cv boot torn open and recommended replacing the axle and want to charge me $250. What is cv boot anyway? He mentioned the grease is falling out. What damage can it do? Thanks. mrtwo 05-27-2004, 09:45 AM I had the same problme on 98. It ended up being the strut mounts. I found this out after I replace both front and rear struts. Do u have to lift the car to replace them? wormhole 05-27-2004, 10:12 AM my brother and i tried to replace the strut mounts ourselves but it was a big pain the butt and i ended up taking it to a tire shop to get the other one put on. AJ236 05-27-2004, 03:23 PM Good info. I'm going to have the struts replaced when I get the strut tower done. That will be the next thing to do to the car. It needs it after 149K miles, ya think? mrtwo 05-29-2004, 07:30 AM my brother and i tried to replace the strut mounts ourselves but it was a big pain the butt and i ended up taking it to a tire shop to get the other one put on. What is the most difficult part? Can u just replace one? Also my strut rubber boots are torn open and coil spring insulators (rubber above and under spring) are aged and kind of squeezed out. Do i need to replace those rubbers? Thanks. mrtwo 05-29-2004, 03:23 PM I had the same problme on 98. It ended up being the strut mounts. I found this out after I replace both front and rear struts. Is it the upper suspension support (by Hayes manual)? vBulletin®, Copyright ©2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
