Its called the Mazdaspeed Miata, its faster, handles better, comes with 17" wheels and a subtle body kit. I test drove one at the Mazda Rev It Up this year and it was amazing.

I also test drove the mazdaspeed miata and loved it as well. the balance of course was amazing and the stiffer springs and sway bars worked well with the amount of power being put down. the only complaint i have was that because they used to six speed the gear ratios were way to short for the amount of torque the engine has. i found myself shifting constantly. the benefit of that transmission however is that mazda shot peened the gears in that six speed just for the mazdaspeed miata.

my brother has a miata and just got a TC installed aftermarket... he said you'll get better performance boosts with aftermarket installs over the mazdaspeed, but i guess you'll spend more... he dropped 10k already on mods so far but his miata is , in a word, sick. Too bad he won't let me race it. :(

I'd get an older car and FI that with a flyin miata turbo or BR performance supercharger.

Way, way more powerfull.

the mazdaspeed is ok but only about 6.5 PSI. where others will boost 8, 12 or even 16PSI

the MSM is a bit laggy on the turbo, and redlines a lot lower than a stock miata, I guess thats to keep the warrant safe and the vehicle from excess wear and tear.

If you want speed I'd get a 99, or 2000 with low miles for about 10k and spend the rest on performance parts.

fuck those 4 cylinders,
get a turbo rotary. 200 stock hp at the very least for a relatively low price

the next miata is going to be based on the RX8 platform, whether it gets a rotary or not no one knows.

a MP62/s3 supercharger will give you 245HP and a 0-60 of 4.9 seconds for under 5k

Miata's generally handle better with smaller wheels, and the 17" rims that come with the MSM are heavy at a little over 18lbs each. that adds a lot of unsprung weight after adding tires, your talking about 30lbs per corner.

some light 14" 15" rims at about 9lbs each are going to improve your handling a hell of a lot, but won't look as cool.

there are some nice 16" wheels out there too, even the basic 16" rims on the 2004 aren't bad weighing 15lbs.

I guess it depends on what you want, a car that looks nice, or a car that performs well in a straght line, twisties or both.

anyway there are a lot of things to be considered when buying a miata and upgrading it with aftermarket parts and most people woudl probably agree that for tuning the 1999 and 2000 are the best base platform to buld from for various reasons. whether its the sheer number of aftermarket parts, or the fact that the 2001+ have VVT which makes the engines a little less solid for boosting, hence the Mazdaspeed having an engine that does't rev as high as other miata's.
