Need some advice or help on my 1997 740il steering wheel shake. At 40 mph the steering wheel shakes until I hit about 52mph. Took it to a local tire shop for a quick balance(I know not the best place to go) and they informed me that my two back wheels were bent, and that all tires were "out of round". They did not even try to sell me tires or wheels so I'm thinking their probably right. If this is true would that be the reason for my shakin steering wheel? I have ordered new wheels and tires, but they won't be in until Wed. If after I install the new tires and wheels and it still shakes does anybody know what it may be. Thanks for any input.

If it still shakes with new tires and wheels there are a couple of other things to check. There are some replacable rear suspension parts with bushings on the E38. Check those. Most places would have told you that you needed new struts, but a 740iL has special (very expensive) struts, but if they aren't leaking hydraulic fluid, they're OK. However, your self-leveling suspension also contains accumulators (known as "bombs") and they may be weak and in need of replacement.

Also, there are some front bushings that wear out on these beasts as well and can cause shaking.

Well, I got the new rims and tires on today and the car drives smooth with no shaking. I hope that elimanates the prob. Since I did this at home and don't have a torque wrench, should I run it to someone who can get the lugs to 90, or just go with my hand as a guide. Thanks.
