What livery is the coolest/not so cool?

All of those GTR's that have raced in different colors and decals, which one is the most awesome for you guys!?

It's a hard nut to crack as the Mc looks great all the time, but surely some kind of favourite should be in the back of your mind!
And there is always that one Mc that did not look as cool as it should!

Coolest:long tail Loctite #41 is just awesome! :iceslolan

Not:long tail EMI #40 is probably the "weakest" look!

It's tough to choose my favorite as there are so many that are really great. I'll have to think about that one.

My least favorite is very easy though - the AM Racing "Veuve Cliquot" livery used for the British GT Series was nothing more than a Papaya Orange longtail GTR with hardly any sponsor decals. Boring...

I look forward to seeing the results on this!

I think my favourite is probably the 96 Gulf or GTR car, although I'm found of my San Miguel and Lark designs as well :D

i hardly decided.......

coolest : definatly the LARK mclaren's , no matter if one of the '96 (#13R , #14R) or '97 gtr's (#19R , #27R) , the '96 GULF gtr's (#12R , #15R) and bscher's loctite (#22R).......

uncool : as mentioned before , the EMKA(#24R) and #05R's pink le mans livery it wore in '96....just ugly

^_^

cool, Ueno looks better in the flesh than in pics. The customer wanted those colours, which did limit the design a little.

I did the following:-
1995 West, West FM, Ueno, Gulf, San Miguel, Frank Muller (was that 95 or 96)
1996 Lark, Lanzante Blue/Yellow, pre season Gulf, West (both versions), Gulf, Marlboro, 96GTR, BMW central flag graphic detailing on Fina cars

maartenvanthek

the Ueno looks the best i reckon, although the Lark and that #05R dragon thing were quite cool as well. On the longtail's i reckon that blue thing with the weapon on it look very good, i don't know the name anymore, it was raced before the british grand prix though.

third from bottom looks awesome in the flesh.

Don't know if you guys know of Radical, who produce track day cars, but a couple of months after the 96 GTR was shown, there car sported a near identical livery in red with yellow wheels and a great big R draped over the car just like the 96 GTR - bit naughty :)

Peloton25
05-20-2004, 02:10 PM
I'm familiar with Radical. This isn't the greatest image, but here's the car you are referring to:

http://www.vfsvideos.co.uk/radical.jpg

I've narrowed down my favorite GTR liveries:

#1: Gulf '96 - if I were lucky enough to own a GTR this is the livery it would wear. The other Gulf liveries were also nice, but the '96 looks the sharpest in my opinion.

http://a6.cpimg.com/image/72/C1/16981106-cc4d-0258012F-.jpg

#2: Another of my favorites is the short tailed Davidoff livery. There was a long tail that looked identical, but I prefer the short tailed GTRs. I've only seen one or two "real" photos of the GTR that wore this livery (I think for a single race) and they weren't worth sharing, so we'll have to go with a shot of the 1/43rd scale Minichamps.

http://a1.cpimg.com/image/39/33/20381241-1095-025801C2-.jpg

#3: My final favorite for short tails is the '96 FINA #39 car with the USA flags draped over the c-pillar. Call me patriotic, but I think it looks really sweet. The #38 car looks just as good, but I'm not from Great Britain or France so.... ;)

http://a9.cpimg.com/image/41/3B/33904449-f6b2-0200017E-.jpg
http://a7.cpimg.com/image/AD/37/30261677-2074-0226016F-.jpg

#4: On the long tails, there isn't much to this particular one, but I really like the look of the JGTC "Zero" livery:

http://a5.cpimg.com/image/C5/8A/17360325-a5c9-01E00140-.jpg
http://a8.cpimg.com/image/80/98/23709568-c50a-01E00140-.jpg

Also Andy - Frank Muller was a '96 livery. The car was originally white and then later painted the more common orange and black. There were also two versions of the orange and black look. I don't have any photos of one of the versions, but did see it clearly in a video that showed McLaren's racing on a track.

It's really not that uncommon to cover the car in stickers rather than paint - they do something similar now as advertising on buses and private cars:

yes, you can heat srink sticker material over an entire car. Quite a labout intensive process, but quicker, than say a respray and cheaper.

see this pic of a different car, http://www.seatcupra.net/images/thruxton_scc_2003/thruxton_sc_m0rk/m0rk_thruxton12.JPG

See the riples under the headlamp. that car is covered yellow in the same way.

Have to say my favourite by a mile would be the Silver one on the previous page, cant remember the name, BBA I think, after that, then probably the Yellow Hat from JGTC

Peloton25
05-20-2004, 07:11 PM
The silver car was run by BBA Competition - driven by Jean-Luc Maury-Laribiére - car owner (F)/Marc Sourd (F)/Hervé Poulain (F) at the 1995 LeMans 24Hrs race. The sponsors were YACCO/TULIES TBF/TELECIEL. It finished the race in 13th place (32 laps behind the winner).

"Pre-Season '96 Gulf livery"?

Also "Sal Incandela" I assume you mean the Dave Price Racing livery used on their 'WEST' car during portions of '96. I think the script on the door read "Sal Oppenheimer & Cie", correct?

never liked it, but the sponsor wanted it, luckily I got my way and reversed the Gulf colours which had been one of the proposals for 95. Change of blue btw was because it was lighter :)

Ahhhh - I had seen that photo before, but never looked at it close enough to notice the differences. I do think the later version is a huge improvement.

Incidentally, do you know any thing about the all white Gulf-liveried car that supposedly appeared in the first race in 1996. I believe that it may have been a replacement car used when the original was wrecked. Anyway, I've still never seen a real photo of it, only the shots of the small diecast reproduction.

i would have to go with the 1996 gulf longtail as my fav. I love the contrast of the blue with the orange wheels

and the worst would be a mclaren longtail used in the brit GT series, aint the pure orange one but a realy weak light blue and white, so tacky and cheap. for a car like the mclaren the colours have to be deep and rich!!

EDIT: however (almost forgot) if the Mclaren F1 LM counts in this post then deffinetly that colour!

P.S. Does any1 have any good pictures of the Mclaren F1 longtail which peloton25 spoke and dint like, its just orange with no sponsors!i think its well nice so basically i have about 3 favourite liveries

The red loop between the exhaust is the tow strap in case the car were to end up in a gravel trap or somewhere it would need to be pulled out of. The red button isn't really a button, it's the connection point to actuate the on-board air jack system.

I believe that connection point, along with the rest of the system was removed from the car when it was converted for road use. Also, the taillights and turn indicators seen on the rear car are no longer those flat flush-fitting discs as seen in this photo. They've been replaced with the standard units from the F1 road car now.

What does livery mean anyway just race car or what.

The definition of the word 'livery' commonly refers to a uniform or a particular style of dress. In relation to a race car, 'livery' refers to the paint scheme and location of sponsorship decals. Generally cars on the same team will wear the same livery to show their association, with only slight differences to help spotters identify each car separately.

I'm talking about the officials from timing/scoring, the people from the pit crew stationed on the pitwall with the lap timers, and of course the fans. Generally the differences will consist of unique colored mirrors, or in the case of the F1s like the Gulf Team, they would wear different colored stripes in the corners of the windshield banners.

...and yeah, the sig photo really needs to go. Mine is at least McLaren-related, and I still turn it off most of the time using the "Show Signature" checkbox below the posting window.
