Here are 2 cars I've been toying with for some time now.

Going to the 360 Challenge race this past weekend with Veyron has given me the system shock I needed get out of my slump and build. There were so many cool cars there it wasn't funny.

I've taken the SAS Stradale transkit and fitted it to the 360 Spider kit. I'm hoping it gives it a more "tuned" and agressive look. The Challenge wheels and wing definately help.
Plans for this car are dark metallic blue paint with the Stradale stripe.

The Mirua is going to be a box stock build. My plans are bright orange like in my avatar, but with aluminum kickpanels and wheels. I'm not a big fan of gold trim or wheels on cars.

Here's some pics. Comments welcome.

lookin' good!
Is that the Fujimi Lambo? and where did the Spyder's wing come from?

Funny thing... I was putting a car together last night with "Fun Tack" (blue stuff) too. I've had some on my bench forever, but had forgotten how useful it can be. :p

Thanks.

Blue tack is awesome stuff. :) I don't think I could build without it.

The Lamborghini Miura is the new Hasegawa kit.. Nicely detailed kit. My only complaint would be the various louvers. They molded them strangely. And they are pretty thick and out of scale. The body seems nice and pretty accurate in its proportions and details. Engine detail is not full detail, but not curbside either.

The wing came off of the Tamiya Mistubishi GTO kit. I know it's not too functional or necessary on the spider, but it makes it different.
It fits the curves of the 360 quite well. It resembles the Koenigseder version a little.

That Ferarri looks sinister. I think the Stradale treatment is just perfect. The Muira will be cool too, I love orange cars. Don't really know why, but I do.

If you want a tuned looking Ferarri, have you considered putting a vent in the hood (is the radiator up front on the car? If not, forget it...). Venting the hood, and if you painted it a metallic orange, you could really bring out the styling similarities between the two cars. Well, at least I find them quit similar in shape (the front end? The vents on the kickpanels? Ferarri coupe would've made them look like mother/daughter, if you could forget the lineage....) Anywho, just an idea that I got a kick out of. Looking forward to seeing these come out.

The Miura was sprayed orange tonight. A little orange peel :), but not too bad. I'll have to let that cure, then mask off the body to spray the kick panels aluminum.

http://files.automotiveforums.com/gallery/watermark.php?file=/502/61680Miura_03.JPG

I sanded the hood flush on the 360, and gave it a light coat of brilliant blue to see where it needed more work.

It won't be red for long. The kit I stole it out of was molded in red. The whole car will be dark metallic blue over brilliant blue. I'm hoping the brilliant blue lightens the metallic paint some. (and I kinda want to see this car the same color as my Enzo, just for a little bit)

Here's a bit of progress on the Miura. This car has been trying my patience from day one. I had problems polishing it, and had to respray the whole car. I added 2 more coats of orange and 2 coats of clear. The kick panels were painted aluminum. I used Alclad II for that. The body still needs polished.

The majority of engine, exhaust, and suspension parts have also been detail painted. I was going to add some engine details, but the rear hatch doesn't open, and very little is visible through the louvers anyway.

I have not touched the interior yet. I always like to save those for last to best match the exterior. It will most like likey be tan, brown, and black.

Anyways, heres some pics

Things are starting to come along nicely. This is my most favorite part, actually getting the pieces to look like a car. :naughty: This kit assembles a little differently from most I've put together, but it is really a nicely fitting kit. The pieces look fairly simple, but once all together looks nice.

Last night I polished out the body, then the engine, exhaust, front and rear suspension were pieced together. I added some heat staining to the exhaust pipes, and it looks decent.

I stripped the chrome wheels and resprayed them with aluminum metalizer, and blackwashed them. They look so much better. Thanks Levincer for pointing them out.

The stance looks pretty convincing compared to my reference photos.

Next is detailing the body, and adding all the extra bits.

pure car porn!

It s a pity HG didnt go the extra mile to add some tiny stuff to the engine bay to actually make it complete engine detail, because it could be your fault, but the engine bay really looks Superb and should IMO be seen, it would be a pity to hide it...
also the rims look more convincing and the body is well, as with any miura, plain sexy

what is "blackwashing" and how does it work?

sorry for the newb question

CADguy
06-02-2004, 02:15 PM
Blackwashing is super thinning out black with a thinner so that it flows into recesses and around ribs to highlight them. I use acrylics for this as they wipe off the high details easier. I'd guess I thinned it by about 10 parts water/alcohol to 1 part paint.

On this car I used Tamiya smoke, as it is translucent, and I think it looks good to highlight wheel details.

If you look at the pic of the real car the inset part of the wheel looks darker than the rim. That is the effect I am trying to replicate with a "wash". I use this on most of my wheels to add some realism. I think some guys here use this technique for panel lines also.

I hope this makes some sense, I thought there was a tutorial on using washes, but I don't see it in the directory.

I've been dying to get back to it..

I've been waiting for a shipment of supplies to continue. I had 4 cans of primer, but they were all empty. :banghead: I guess I should throw those away when they're done, so I'll know to buy more.. :) I just tracked the package and it will be delivered today.. Woo-Hoo.. I love packages of paint.. I ordered enough to complete my next 4 builds.

The Miura is far enough along to finish by this weekend hopefully. My plan is to spray the interior parts tonight.

Since last post, I've gotten the hood intakes smoothed out. Also, the supports for the rear wing are installed Just 4 round rods, nothing fancy.

I mocked this car up with 19" Volk TE37's and they look great on the rear, but not on the front. Too wide and tall. If I can find a set of 18" TE37's for the front, I will probably not use the Stradale wheels.

Anyways.. here's some pics..

It's been too humid here to spray the body. But while I'm waiting on the weather to get nice, I've been painting the small bits and pieces.

I sprayed the interior last night. The door panels were masked off 4 times to spray the various 5 colors I used. 3 shades of blue/grey, black, and titanium silver. The details still need painted on the dash and center console.

I had a chance to get some paint on the spider this weekend. The color is Tamiya midnight metallic blue over brilliant blue, then a couple coats of clear. The brilliant blue gave it a more purple feel. In bright light it's a gorgeous shade of dark metallic blue. The camera captured it pretty well.

While spraying the body, I thought it may be too dark to go with the interior, but after seeing them together I'm very satisfied with the match. Some aluminum wheels will lighten the overall look of the car hopefully.

I think I'd leave off the stripe on that one, Matt.

Colors look awesome!

I'm thinking that the stripe doesn't suit this build either.

The color looks more "classy" than "sporty" to me.. It's really the opposite of what I hoped to achieve with this one. The dark color hides the addition of the Stradale kit. A brighter color would've made for a sportier look, lending itself better to the racing stripe.

I'm gonna pick up another 360 spider at the 1/2 off Hobby Lobby sale this week and try again. Probably not right away, but sometime. This seems to be one of the simpler Tamiya Ferrari kits to build.

I've made some progress finally on the 360. It's a few days away from completion.
The interior is detailed and assembled. The body was polished. Front and rear suspension is together, and the lower half of the engine bay is complete.

This will probably be the last update, as there's not much left to do, but the top of the engine bay and detailing the body and adding glass.

Thanks for following these builds. :)

TS-53 would be correct.
It's actually called Deep Metallic Blue by Tamiya..
I've been calling it the wrong name.
It looks almost black until it's in bright light.

I think TS-51 (Telefonica blue) is closer to the shade I was hoping to achieve. :banghead:
