If your door stickers say it came with V rated tires most likely it is. It'll say H rated if not.

To be sure, look for QQX in the build code sticker. In you 96 it'll be behind the trunk liner near your power antenna.

Were they ever advertised as having the Autobahn Package? Or does it say it anywhere in the manual??

I know you! heh

Never advertised, it was a little know secret that some (actually most) classics came outfitted with Caddy STS features O.O

:D

No! its a nice suprise :D Imagine an unsuspecting owner buying an Aurora and realizing the one he bought is JUST a bit better then the one is buddy bought, esp if and when they line it up..

The regular 3.48 geared Aurora is probably faster top end (but its governed at 108) then the 3.71, but the Autobahn gets off the line right quickly. Life at 140 mph is pretty sweet...(for a few moments anyway)

What actually is the Autobahn Package? I'm asking because my door says V rated tires. '98. Is that a good thing to have? I just got this, and from the sound of it, I got a sweeter deal the more I read...

The autobahn option gives you better tires - higher speed rating anyway, usually Michelin instead of Goodyear (?). Also better acceleration because of the transaxle ratio, and a speed governor set at 140 mph instead of 110 mph - I'm not sure how much difference this will make to your driving habits. :)
I guess it should be a little worse on fuel consumption though, with the different transaxle ratio.
It seems that most classic Aurora's came with this option.

Makes me happy! Good to know that you have one of th better (well maybe better) ones on the road. Mine has Pirellies on it now. I believe they are the original because they have some weather cracking. It a '98 with 65K so that would equate based on the tire condition. Thanks!

Nope, they're not original. You either got Michelin MXV4's if you had the Autobahn package, or Goodyear Eagle GA's if you didn't. Just because you have V-rated tires, doesn't 100% mean you have the Autobahn package, though it's highly likely. Suggest you look at the RPO build sheet in the trunk for option "QQX".

dred, less than half of original Auroras came with the autobahn package.

QQX is the build code for the V rated tires, FV4 is the code for the Autobahn transaxle ratio, although I don't think you see one without the other.
How much did the autobahn option cost on a new Aurora ?

I'm just going by the option code list on Zincster's (dormant) Aurora site at

http://members.fortunecity.com/zincster/specifications.htm

Per that, the Autobahn option was $395.

The second gen Aurora came stock with the 3.71, but has a speed limiter.

At least that is what I understand, the Zincster site is for Classic Auroras only

I checked, yes, I have the QQX code. Sure alot of them on that tag. Anywho, When replacement tirescom into play, I think I will stick with the Pirellis. This is a really nice/cool/neat/whatever car. Hope it stays that way for awhile. It's been awhile since I had a car that I want to baby (for awhile anyway), should I blow it out once in awhile? I mainly do a combo of city/hiway miles. 100 a day. Any advice on how to keep the insides clean is appreciated.

What's the speed limiter set at on the non-classic Auroras ?
I'd guess it was the 140, is it ?

By the way Jim, shouldn't you be changing your screen name ?

Something tells me its 128mph (H-rated tires), no facts just a gut feeling.

Ya, I guess I have to change that 96 to a 97... :P

I don't have the "z" rated tires -- so tonight I decided to go for it and see what mph I could reach and I got to 125 (before I hit construction and got scared) --- Is that good enough to ASSume that I have the autobahn package? From the threads I THINK the cut off is 110?
