Mclaren F1 Moviezx4000 05-14-2004, 09:19 AM this is not the drag of F1 vs skyline GT-R, show sprint 0-400m, more details in aerodynamic and we are able to see clearly the undertray of F1 with disffusor not shown untill now. i think this movie clip is the longest shown ever so far now. I have one suspicion, but it's not worth bringing up just yet. There is actually a spot in that video about midway through the beginning where they do pan over the chassis plaque, but you can't read it in the encoded file. I'm hopeful that it would be readable in the actual taped video, but I haven't been able to find a copy. I saw this video when it was brand new on tape as a friend of mine is a huge fan of Japanese cars and he used to travel into Los Angeles' "Little Tokyo" area to a tiny Japanese video store to rent the newest "Best Motoring" video each month. He was one of my roommates at the time, so naturally each time he'd bring a new one home I'd get to see it. I don't recall the year exactly (maybe '94 or '95), but this video was highly influental in stirring my passion for the McLaren F1. It's been available on RacingFlix.com in this form for about 1 year and I was really happy to get to watch it again as like tvrfreak said, it's unbelievably good. I just wish it was captioned with subtitles in English as my Japanese is very poor. :grinno: >8^) ER teflon 05-14-2004, 07:52 PM Could the car be owned by a member of the Ojjeh family? It could be one of those "lost in Japan" F1s, or it could have made it's way to another place - like the USA... I only wish that I could understand it. joebowlr21 05-15-2004, 04:14 AM That video has been around for a long time as it was released some time ago on a Best Motoring International Video.If i'm not mistaken, and i may be.......it is supposed to have been wrecked awhiles back. While i have researched for the wreck of this mclaren, i could find nothing else about the car.It is said to have been destroyed in japan but my leads often lead to junk yards where the owners knew nothing of high end cars. Yes i did say junk yards, as from some contacts i have, it was towed to a local junkyard by mistake and never seen again.Now this cannot be proven as of yet, but i've been researching this specific Mclaren for years.I've also had many e-mail exchanges with the good people at Best motoring but the few people that actually saw the car during the filming do not work there anymore and left no further contacts. I have contacted Hatorri (through my contacts) who is a JGTC driver who was the driver for the testing and he does not recelect the chassis number that was told to him. Although he says he remembers asking how many were made and they told him it was made in the first year of production in 1994. I have 1 very strong lead right now that is pointing me toward a shipping yard in japan where the vehicle might be resting, but will report once hard facts and photographic evidence can be shown. That's very interesting info that you share about the possibility of a wreck. I can tell you that the normal stories of crashed/damaged McLarens that I'm aware of don't include any stories of F1s located in Japan. If you find out more info, or actually do come up with photos you can share that would be great. I couldn't believe it myself when i first heard the stories about a Mclaren at a junk yard, but as it was explained to me the owner wasn't aware. From the story i have gathered, this chassis was actually being tested on a high speed course when the driver lost control destroying the vehicle. Now from what understand the owner wasn't present for the testing and knew nothing until hours after the crash.As it is reported by some contacts of mine, the car was taken away by a different trailer then the one which originaly brought the car to the track.How, may u ask, well i will give one scenario which seems very believable. The driver of the trailer was actually bribed with a very large some of money to pull the trailer into a "blind spot" near the track so nobody could see it. Just as the vehicle was crashed, the new trailer pulled into the same area the original was in. Now, i know it sounds very far fecthed but the driver was in on the steal as well.Purposely he lost control and damaged the vehicle to draw everyones attention from the trailer being moved.As this happened,the owner was on a direct route toward the track in order to see the damages. Upon his arrival, he was told that his trailer was talking the vehicle back the Mclaren shop to have the damages asessed. Reaching the facility he sees the trailer and runs to see the damage. Now there were reported 2 workers talking to the driver as he came up to find out what was going on. He was informed how the wrecked vehicle was missing from the trailer. After this, my information becomes sketchy on how or what actions were takin to find the vehicle. it was supposedly take an dropped off at a junk yard where nobody would suspect such a car being there. I will post more when i can get my hands on something else. Everything that i have just stated has taken me 2 years to peice together, yet i still cannot tell everyone that it is Fact and not fiction. And if it really is just sitting there without an owner, wouldn't they try to reclaim the car? It just doesn't seem feasible that a McLaren F1 could go missing and become abandoned in the corner of some junkyard in Japan. The story implies the car was stolen, but what would be the point of wrecking a car you were going to steal. Its not like you would be able to get it repaired once it was "stolen". It also wouldn't be worth anything to anyone else because with just a little bit of research any prospective buyer would be able to learn the history of the car. Also, this isn't a Toyota - I can assure you that if a million dollar McLaren F1 went missing it would be big news, not some obsscure story that it has taken 2 years to piece together. Or am I confusing that with the modem which must be plugged in to transmit data about any mechanical problems? Peloton25 05-19-2004, 03:05 PM There was nothing like a GPS locator installed by the factory, though some owners have now had GPS Navigation systems installed which may allow for the reverse if the unit is on. The modem to transmit info back to the factory does need to be plugged into the data port inside the left side luggage compartment in order to work. I don't believe there is a place to store the modem in the car - I think it's included in the rolling Facom toolchest. It also requires a phone line to transmit info from the ECU. I assume this could have been updated to a cellular link by now which would allow for remote transmission of data without a landline, but I'm not sure if they've taken that step with it. >8^) ER tvrfreak 05-19-2004, 04:11 PM It is something that has to be activated by the operator before the factory can get any readings from it. They can't just dial into a car and start reading information. Also, while it can issue the commands for most battery powered functions, such as activating the wiper, it can't turn on the ignition--wouldn't be too pretty if the car was in gear... It was clear that since any local service centre could be several hours away accurate fault diagnosis would be imperative. In a typically brilliant leap of imagination, McLaren decided to use the same technology that was then being pioneered by its grand prix team, and chose to install a system that allows the factory to 'talk' to all road going F1's. In exactly the same way that the Team McLaren Mercedes race engineers use computer telemetry to see what Mika Hakkinen and David Coulthard have been doing on the race track, the men in the know at McLaren cars can quickly diagnose problems in any McLaren F1. Harold Dermott, Manager of Customer Care, explains how the system works. "Every F1 customer is handed a modem that they can connect simultaneously to their car and telephone line. Essentially there are two electronic 'brains' in the car, one controlling the engine management, the other looking after the cars electronics. Between them they control most of the systems in the F1. The modem allows the engineers at the factory to diagnose any problems that either of these two 'brains' has recorded in it's memory, not unlike in aircraft and grand prix cars." http://www.mclarencars.com/content/sections/ccare/modic1o.jpg The trick is a special diagnostic tool called MoDiC, an acronym for Mobile Diagnostic Computer. With the MoDiC, we can analyse immediately the given problem and tell the customer what we think is the likely cause for concern" says Dermott. McLaren has made sure that there is a fully equipped servicing facility in every country where an F1 roadcar can be found. Well amongst other things, it keeps a detailed record of the exact mileage of the car at the point the fault was recorded, for how long it lasted, the speed in rpm of the engine when it occurred, the engines water temperature and the date, time and ambient weather on the day in question. It could probably tell you what the customer had for breakfast, too. This would surely be good enough for even the most exacting company but McLaren Cars thinks it can do even better. Plans are afoot for a significant improvement to the system. "The next stage of development is to adapt the fault diagnostic capabilities to the GSM networks", explains Dermott. "Then we won't have to rely solely on land lines. It effectively means that we'll be able to talk to customers' cars via mobile phones at the roadside. This is realistically at least nine months away, but the upgrade will then be available to cutomers as a simple modification." Diagnosing faults in Sydney via a mobile connection to Woking?
