Police chase ends down cliff
WEDNESDAY, 12 MAY 2004

A drive-by shooting sparked an Armed Offenders Squad call out and a rescue mission near Kimbolton, 30km northeast of Feilding, overnight after two suspects became stuck on a ledge down a cliff.
Three men were arrested early this morning.
The drama started in Apiti at 10pm yesterday when shots were allegedly fired at a local man from a passing white van, Feilding Detective Sergeant Kevin Anstis said. "There was a short pursuit and, as a result, three men who were in the van ran off into bush near the London Ford Road area," Mr Anstis said this morning.
One man was caught quickly and the other two kept running.
The AOS was called out, along with police tracker dogs, to search for the men and the Square Trust helicopter used its high-powered searchlight to aid in the tramp through rugged terrain.
The two men were eventually found by police dogs on a ledge about 30m down a 100m cliff about 3am. One of them, a 45 year old, is believed to have broken an arm and a leg when he fell down the bush-clad, almost vertical cliff. He is also thought to have back and chest injuries.
"A 27 year old clambered down the bank to see what he could do for the other man," St John paramedic Howard Wills said.
The man then got stuck on the ledge.
A rope squad was flown in from Wellington by helicopter and abseiled down the cliff to retrieve the two men. About 16 emergency service personnel were involved in the rescue.
The injured man, who was the last one to be removed from the scene, was hauled to safety about 8am.
Palmerston North search and rescue officer Bill Nicholson described the rescue as extremely difficult, since it was carried out at night on steep terrain.
"The only good thing about it was that the weather was mild," he said. "Those guys are very, very lucky . . . how they didn't die down there is anyone's guess."
The injured man could be heard moaning as he was winched to safety.
Wearing a balaclava, camouflage jacket and one army boot, the heavily tattooed man was extremely aggressive, and told reporters to "f*** off, or I will kick your arse".
Wellington Free Ambulance squad leader Wayne Gray said good teamwork and a lot of skill was needed to safely retrieve the man, who had to be immobilised before being put in a stretcher. "He was a pretty solid chap, which made it extremely difficult," Mr Gray said. The other two had by then been taken to Feilding police station and charged.
The men were to appear in Palmerston North District Court today on a joint charge of unlawful possession of a firearm, pending further inquiries. Further charges are expected.
A police mufti car used in the chase was extensively damaged and had to be towed from the scene.

Palmerston North?
Ain't that where the P-Man lives?

I wonder if the older guy was slightly over-weight and balding?
