BARs in front, they could be very strong here. Also the same tendency we saw in Bahrain and Malaysia - Ferraris absolutely inihilate everyone and then hardly ever top the timing sheets until the last qualifying run. We'll see what happens.

Discuss please
What's to discuss? Conclusion, foregone. Do some ironing, mow the lawn, watch it grow again

and hope to see a nice red parade on the podium.
Variety not your style? :p

OK, so prequalifying is under way. 5 drivers did their laps and Schumi in front so foar. BARs are showing fantastic pace again. Perhaps that Ferrari mid wing (they even painted it red! :D) is helping. Renaults seem to be struggling a lot though. Should have used a Ferrari mid-wing instead of the new engine. Ralf is starting his lap.

... and goes quickest by a hair.

ales
04-24-2004, 06:27 AM
... only to be bettered by Montoya

RallyRaider
04-24-2004, 06:35 AM
Ralf before Montoya? I was under the impression they started in championship order? Must be classifications from the last race or something. :dunno:

ales
04-24-2004, 06:36 AM
They started in the championship (2003 championship, that is) order at the first race, after that it's in the order they finished the previous race.

RallyRaider
04-24-2004, 06:39 AM
Okay, since the only qually session I've seen live is the first one that explains that!

ales
04-24-2004, 06:43 AM
So the top prequali positions are (speaking in code):
JPM
RS
MS
DC
JB
GF
RB
TS
KR

RallyRaider
04-24-2004, 06:46 AM
DC>KR-BS! LOL

ales
04-24-2004, 06:49 AM
You don't like DC much, do you? :)

RallyRaider
04-24-2004, 06:53 AM
DC is fine, he does the "Shumi Chop" even better than the man himself. Not good for KR to be slower than him though.
Honestly I just wanted to respond in your 'code' and that was the first thing that came to mind :p

I'm curious to find out if Kimi had a problem or Mclaren just decided to make a mockery of qualifying ... again. Good job.

RallyRaider
04-24-2004, 07:34 AM
McLaren make a mockery of qualifying? I think the FIfrigginA got there first  All anybody can do now is highlight the fact.

ales
04-24-2004, 07:37 AM
How is what Mclaren are doing different to what Arrows and especially Minardi did? I seem to recall you being very critical of Minardi.

ales
04-24-2004, 07:44 AM
Damn! Button 0.7 sec. faster than Rubens! DC's turn.

ales
04-24-2004, 07:46 AM
DC just 8th (so far 1.3) off Button.

Veyron
04-24-2004, 07:46 AM
Dammit, your getting the feed before my TV or your watching live timing online...

RallyRaider
04-24-2004, 07:47 AM
????

I'm not critical of Minardi (Stoddy is another matter). Refresh my memory, what did Minardi do especially? Do you mean not run in qualifying and skip parc ferme? Good show.

In fact I'm dissapointed they don't just fit a fresh engine before each race. Although on current form that would drop them behind Jordan  They'd never do that these days, they're relying on Bernie's handouts so must toe the line tighter than anybody, sigh.

ales
04-24-2004, 07:48 AM
Yes, that's what I meant, but never mind. Schumi messed up on his lap and is behind Button with just two Williamses to go.

ales
04-24-2004, 07:50 AM
Ralf 4th...

crayzayjay
04-24-2004, 07:51 AM
Damn Button was quick. Schumi was really on the ragged edge and made a mistake. The Williams look like they're running more fuel...

ales
04-24-2004, 07:53 AM
Make that 5th as JPM takes 3rd place. First pole for Button and BAR. Superb job. Followed by Schumi, JPM, Rubens, Ralf, Alonso, Sato, Webber, Trulli, da Matta DC, Massa ... Raikkonen and Fisi at the end.

ales
04-24-2004, 07:54 AM
Make your prdeictions for the race, gentlemen! I'll wait a little for mine, need to think about it :)

ales
04-24-2004, 07:57 AM
Jay, I wouldn't say Schumi was on the ragged edge, I just watched his lap again, his car was on rails until he took that left curb in Variante Alta too aggressively whcih pushed him wide. Button's lap was just impeccable though. Waiting for the press conference.

crayzayjay
04-24-2004, 07:59 AM
I only saw it once and it seemd to me he was pushing pretty hard. As you say, waiting for the press conf :)

ales
04-24-2004, 08:02 AM
Well, he was pushing hard, but it still seemed like Jenson worked the steering wheel somewhat more than Schumi.

Come on now, let's hear some predictions for the race!

crayzayjay
04-24-2004, 08:02 AM
Schumi's lap was "all or nothing", he said ;)

How must Monty be feeling sitting next to Jenson? The way McLaren are going (or not, as is more often the case) their career paths look to be diverging pretty fast..

RallyRaider
04-24-2004, 08:02 AM
Yeah, Schumacher hasn't been on the ragged edge since Mika became a daddy.

11th and last, must be the worst qualifying performance by Ronzo's boys since Long Beach '83. Can't see 'em repeating the Sunday form from back then.

crayzayjay
04-24-2004, 08:05 AM
Predictions?

MS
JPM
JB

I still think JB isnt as good as he should be at protecting his position on the track... i think schumi & jpm will both get past him whether it's strategy or on-track

You're gonna have to expand a little on that, grandpa

The first corner will be very interesting, after that, procession.

1983 US GP at Long beach. Ferrari qualified on the first row (Tambay in front of Arnoux) with Mclaren 22 with Watson and 23rd with Lauda. Then they went on to finish 1-2 (Watson taking the win) and lapping everyone but Arnoux's Ferrari. Fat chance tomorrow :p

Concurr. If Schumacher gets ahead at the start it will all be over. If he doesn't it will all be over by the first stops.

Jay, I thought you were a student of F1. Surely you'd be aware of one of the the most astounding back of the grid to victory drives ever?

No problemo Fanboy! :)

Truth be told, whilst Wattie was superb, it was more a case of an extremely bad qualifying session. Coupled with a big nights work by the team and some inspired punting by Keke Rosberg - the feat is yet to be equalled!

Reports are that it is raining in Imola (no idea how hard) at the moment and that there will be rain throughout the race. Rains hard = Bridgestone territory, slight drizzle+damp and greasy track = Michelin territory. Hope for the former :D

5 hour torrential thunderstorm last night, looking nice n sunny now

ales
04-25-2004, 06:15 AM
Yep, just looked at the live pictures, it is dry and somewhat sunny, but there are quite a few clouds in the sky. Anyway, with the track being washed it seems like Bridgestone will have an advantage as we've seen them perform very well on green tracks.

crayzayjay
04-25-2004, 06:50 AM
ITV did a nice feature on what happens to a driver's heart rate when driving an F1 car.

Gianmaria Bruni's rate goes from ~40bpm when he wakes up in the morning (which is admittedly low) to 160bpm in the car on his qualifying lap!! He was working damn hard though, that Minardi has no downforce whatsoever!

Indeed. I've got an inkling MS will beat JB to the first corner.

Looks to be another sorry race for DC & McL

Replay of JPM's attempted overtaking of MS doesnt show any wrong-doing on MS's part, he was on the racing line.. catching JB now

RallyRaider
04-25-2004, 07:09 AM
MS .6 and .9 of a second faster than JB on the 2nd and 3rd laps.

ales
04-25-2004, 07:12 AM
Sato is in a great 4th. So, are BARs running light or just that fast?

RallyRaider
04-25-2004, 07:12 AM
Schumacher has caught Button. Now watch him wait for the first stops.
