i just had a timing belt break while my tach read about 4000 rpm. Is there enough clearence to avoid bent valves or should I start with the heads. Please anyone, thank-you.

what did it sound like when it snapped at 4k? if you heard some metallic clanking sound, i'd say start with the heads. more than likely at that rpm, one of the valves was down far enough to contact a piston because you have to remember the valves are normally fully closed when the piston hits TDC(top dead center). so i'd say you probably have some damaged valves and probably a piston or two that is pretty messed up to, but that's just a guess based on what you said and from my own experience. hope this helps

timing belts suck when they break. when you replace it, make sure you drop the oil pan and clean it out. the last owner of my bro's saturn didn't drop the pan when the timing belt broke and after a while the small metal pieces of the timing belt ate away at the crankshaft. it was horrible looking.

uhhhh your motor is done, the z is a interfierence motor, which means when thetiming belt breaks your pistons and valves go bye bye

Yeah you need to tear the motor down. You might luck out and be able to save the bottom end but you definiately need a new set of heads or if your lucked out again, rebuild your current heads with new valves/anything-else-that-blew-up. The pistons are probably scored and pitted bad from banging the valves and you'll more likely than not need a complete engine rebuild or a fresh motor. If you have the cash, get a good shop to do the work rather than try and save money doing it yourself because one thing I have learned pulling the engine out of my TT is that you do not want to work on these cars unless you are a very sincere masochist.

That happened to my first ZedX... The lower end was FINE. Most of the valves were bent though.

A few hours in the machine shop (few days actually) and she ran like a champ. You'll be aight.

Get the timing procedures from your local Nissan Dealership.

Be kind to them, and they will more than likely "hook it up".

Get Number1 piston at TDC (Top Dead Center)

5 6
3 4
1 2

And the procedure should be simple from there...
