here is my technique and i am sure most peoples is similar

Yes automotive primer will work, duplicolor makes great primers

sand the car with 500 grit or so

add primer

wet sand the primer with 1200 grit or so just to smooth it out

wash the body with soap and water to remove any crap on it

add your first mist coat of paint(this coat is very light just to cover the car)

Let first mist coat fully dry

add a second light coat of paint

this is were i like to wet sand with 2000 grit. it will really smooth it out for the final wet coat of paint

add one last coat of nice paint

FULLY DRY OVERNIGHT

add your clear coat(1 or 2 mist coats NOT ONE HEAVY COAT!!)

Testors spray cans suck, if you are airbrushing the jars of testors and model master and boyd paints are great. Tamiya makes real nice spray cans i know alot of people use those. Duplicolor makes great automotive paints that will work great also.

its the degree of roughness the higher the number the finer the sand is on the paper the lower the number the coarser

sorta like rubbing your hand along paper with powder on it

heh i live right next to whitesands national monument (not right by but close enough where when the wind blows you can sand the paint off your car with your hand since the gypsum (fiberglass) is all over it)

also are we the only all day and all nighters? :screwy:

or machines :grinno:

6000-12000 are super fine, but 2000 is just fine for smoothing and polishing work.

The FAQ could've answered your question had you taken the time to read it carefully.
