Security remote programming problem....

Maybe someone here can help me? The remote for my security system died, so I am trying to program this new remote. Problem is, the instructions that were given to me w/the remote do not seem to work.
Here is what I got:
1. Open drivers side door
2. Put key into igntion, then pull out
3. with door open, lock and unlock five times on door console.
4. Close, then open door.
5. Lock and unlock five times on door console
6. Put key into igntion, turn to the on position then pull key out (hear the door lock and unlock a few times)---------I NEVER HEAR THIS--------
7. Press lock and unlock buttons at the same time for a second
8. Press lock for one second
9. Exit car and close door.
This doesn't work, the door never locks and unlocks like is mentioned in step six, what do I do?
