Hey... I'm new to this forum as i have just purchased a 1983 944. I am gettin a new paint job this week, but following that I want to start getting into performance mods (intake, exhaust, headers, ignition...etc) I am going to start off with a cold air intake but my search has led me to find 27.5 different options. So I was wondering what are your personal favorites (msds, vtx, k&n, etc). Thanks.

The "cold" air intakes you mention, are they just the cone filters on a stick? If so, save your money. They all pull hotter air from the engine bay through them.

Suggestion 1 - Use the K&N drop in filter. The air inlet should still go to the cooler and slightly pressurized left front wheel well. (note: K&N = personal favorite, must be cleaned every 2 months so get the recharge kit too)

Suggestion 2 - Get your T & B belts and rollers changed. It doesn't matter what the PO said, what matters is when your $20 belt goes and you end up forking out at least $1700 to replace the valves you just dented.

Suggestion 3 - get a tune up. don't laugh about that one because you'd be amazed at what you've been missing. An added benefit is that you don't need the aftermarket ignition to make up for the losses from the old plugs, wires, cap, and rotor.

Suggestion 4 - Get the head ported. It's almost agreeable that you can gain the most power just from porting/matching.

PS: Here's how you turbo it. Clean the 83 and sell it for a 951. It's the most cost effective way to get the turbo engine, suspension, brakes installed.

I'm sorry, I forgot one easy power upgrade. Get a later model chippable (the early DMEs aren't chippable) DME AND Air Flow Sensor.

so will the Late DME plug right into the old wiring harness? All you need is a late AFM?? How much hp gain can you expect from that with a chip?

It's quite literally plug and play. Make sure you get a matching AFM for the DME. As for HP, it all depends on what chip you get. www.frwilk.com has reportedly some good chips and a lot of info.
