HELP! transmission/clutch noisegundamcivic 04-05-2004, 05:52 PM hey, i just recently bought a 1992 honda civic si hatch and have had a problem with it, as soon as i start the car, there is slight scraping noise in the transmission. it sounds like the clutch plate is rubbing in the trans somewhere cause if i press the clutch in it goes away. its not to loud right now but rubbing metal is usually bad news in any situation on a car. im pretty sure its something rubbing cause if i wiggle the shifter the noise changes pitches but continues till i press in the clutch. the car still runs and performs fine but it probably won't stay that way. if any one has had this problem please tell about it. thanx BullShifter 04-07-2004, 02:14 AM The noise your hearing is most likely an internal bearing called - input shaft bearing. Input shaft bearing go bad from incorrect DOWNSHIFTS. If the bearing is bad, I'll bet 2nd gear/synchro is chewed up. If I were you I'd start looking for a good used or rebuilt trans. Your '92 trans probably has high miles & not worth rebuilding. The noise from shifter is normal just the fork & synchros moving, shafts. gundamcivic 04-07-2004, 01:06 PM hey thanx alot man, hopefully that aint to expensive, oh yah just one more question, how long is that gonna last?? is it like somethin i need to fix right away or can it wait like a month or two?? BullShifter 04-07-2004, 07:47 PM To remove the trans is about 3.0hrs labor(book time), re-install 3.0hrs, plus an hour or so to replace the bearing. You can get a used trans for $300 & pop that in. I could be wrong, it's hard to fix a noise without hearing it. If you can change spark plugs, you can pretty much do anything on a civic 4-banger. 1 of the easiest cars to work on IMO. Having a repair manual from www.helminc.com will walk you through the entire car, including trans R&R. I drove my car for 20K miles with a bad input shaft bearing. Started out soft & by 20K it was loud as hell. When that bearing does break loose your tans will lock-up. vBulletin®, Copyright ©2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
