Noooo!!! Not another SUV!! The RX and the LX were fine, Lexus shouldn't make the GX. Three SUVs?!?!?  It's looks HUGE--Suburban size. I think this will seriously hurt the Lexus name. It'll just be another (regular) car company with a fleet of SUVs.

I read in the paper recently that in the U.S. market, there are 50 SUVs available, with at least 20 in the wings to be introduced in the next year or so.

Toyota already has 5, and Lexus 2, with the GX being the third. Does Toyota really have to put the Lexus "L" and 50 sq. ft. of leather in all 5?

The GX470 has no direct connection to a US Toyota product. It's actually smaller than the LX470.

Fifty? I counted 56 with 19 more coming. I could be missing some, though.

Do you count the Audi allroad, Subaru Outback, and Volvo V70 XC? No. :silly2: I just paraphrased the L.A. Times article. They weren't so kind as to list them, like you. :D

Not unlikely for the US market. The Lexus LS430 and SC430 have no US Toyota counterparts. Neither does the IS300. Currently, the GX470 is most closely related to the Land Cruiser/LX470...but hardly close enough to be called a clone.

ii think the new gx 470 is pretty nice car... i think it might replace the lx470 but thats what i think i heard from my aunt..(finance manager at darcars lex).. but the car i think is a real nice addition... being it has the v8 engine from the lx and lighter body.... nice cruizin car.... PIMP IT is all i have to say about it... :D

It would make sense for the LX470 to be replaced, but Lexus claims otherwise. The LX is priced in the $60k range while the new GX will be in the $40-50k range. It's marginally smaller than the LX, so they plan to keep both around. They said the Sequoia would replace the Land Cruiser and that hasn't happened yet.

So the GX isn't just a rebadged Sequoia? That's what I was expecting.

Y'know, they wouldn't keep making all these SUVs if people didn't keep buying them.... and, if they weren't just insanely profitable.

Of course, I own an SUV so who am I to judge.....

Guys, the GX470 DOES indeed have a Toyota counterpart. The 4Runner is due for a 2003 redesign. They have just been keeping it under raps. The 4Runner and GX470 are going to be the same SUV... with the GX being slightly more expensive and optioned-out. So if you're curious about what the 2003 4Runner is going to look like, look no further than the GX470. And yes... the 4Runner is going to have the same V-8.

I can't wait! I drive a '01 Toyota Tundra and my wife drives a '99 4Runner. I've always told everyone that the only thing missing in the 4Runner is power (acceleration, towing, etc.)... and that if they were to drop my Tundra's engine into a 4Runner that it would be a force to be reckoned with. It's surely going to clober its American counterparts in quality and most performance measures. Real muscle and Toyota durability/reliability/quality... just like my Tundra. Believe me, these two SUVs (GX and 4Runner) are not going to be a mistake. They are going to be the new benchmark, just as the Tundra is the new benchmark for half-ton pickups. Consumer Reports is about to encounter their next two golden children in these SUVs.

It's rather a shame that Toyota Canada didn't accept the Lexus GX470 into the Canadian Automotive Market, it could of easily been a great alternative to the Mercedes Benz ML500, Cadillac Escalade, BMW X5 and Lincoln Navigator pricewise.

these are the following equivalents for the Toyota to Lexus relationships:

Lexus LS430 (Toyota Celsior in Japan)
Lexus GX470 = Toyota 4 Runner (Toyota Hilux Surf in Japan)
Lexus RX300 (Toyota Harrier in Japan) = Toyota Highlander (Kluger V in Japan)
Lexus ES300 (Toyota Windom in Japan) = Toyota Camry
Lexus GS series (Toyota Aristo in Japan)
Lexus IS series (Toyota Altezza in Japan)
Lexus SC series ( Toyota Soarer in Japan)
Lexus LX470 = Toyota Land Cruiser

The Land Cruiser and LX470 are likely to be discontinued in favor of the Toyota Sequoia as well the probable Lexus rebadged Sequoia.

i think Lexus made a mid range SUV, as an "in-between" SUV. Cuz 4 sum ppl, the LX470 maybe too expensive or too big or whatever, and then the RX330, too small, or whatever, and the GX, thers nothing 2 complain about, by the way, like the new redesigned style of the RX330? also hudson, u forgot the Land Rover Defender
