keep my 96 accord or not?aznxthuggie 04-01-2004, 02:45 AM hey guys, its almost time for me to make a decision, whether or not to keep my accord, i know since this is an accord forum, u guys will say keep it, but hear me out.. my 96 accord seems to have lots of problems, and its only mines, 4 of my friends drive the same generation accord, and their engines are so , i only have 88800 miles on my car and it sounds like its guna break down all the time, recently there is a whistling sound coming from my car, also its automatic, but everytime it goes to the next gear it shift so violenly, and my front suspension is guna go soon since i hear it clanking over every lil dip n bump i go over (i've already replaced the rear suspension since it shakes violently everytime i brake), also.. at about 2500rpms theres a shaking sound coming from the engine which also happens when i put the car in reverse, i am the second owner, and the only thing the first owner did to the car was put a cold air intake and cut the springs.... if i keep the accord, i'll need to repair or deal with these problems, in the time i've had it i seen SO MANY NICE ACCORDS, i also know where to get parts for it and im pretty sure i can make mines look better (o yea the reason i have a choice is because my brother needs a car, so i would be giving it, and all its problems to him.. but HEY it was my first car and it'll be his.. i had to replace the radiator/brakes/springs/window motors already.. i think he can do the rest) if i dont keep the car, i have a choice of a used car under $6000, or a new car from $15-$19,000 but my parents will only help me on $6000 of it.. so what should i do guys? gimme some suggestions ak_honda 04-01-2004, 10:23 AM well, you could always take it to the dealer to have them just look and tell you what the problems are exactly, since it sounds like you don't know for sure. i have a 1997 accord and it is going on 80,000 miles now, a lot of which are highway though, and i have had no problems. it's really up to you if you want to keep it or not. but with whatever decision you make, good luck. if you don't want to take it to the dealer, take it to a really good mechanic. Chelle126 04-02-2004, 03:12 AM If it were me I'd find out exactly what is wrong with it and then decide what to do. You never know it could be no big deal and only minor repairs, if you give it to your little brother and find out it was minor you may kick yourself. If it were me and I found out what was wrong with it I would probally fix it (but I love my accord) but if I didn't want to deal with it I'd give it to my little brother (I don't really have one, I'm just saying that if I were in your shoes) and help him out with some of the do it yourself repairs that he would be facing. And then get a used car. I like those better than new. Call me crazy but I like to work on my cars. Either way you go good luck to you. Igovert500 04-03-2004, 11:45 AM If you are hearing a clanking when going over dips, its probably your bearing assembly. Can you grab hold of the wheel and shake it back and forth...if it produces the same noise and has some play, then its the bearings. It could also be the shocks need replacing or worn balljoints, I would get it checked out to know for sure. As it may get worse with time. Personally, 89k isn't that high for a Honda, I have 156k or so and mine still would work if NY's "salt the hell out of the roads and everyone's cars" plan, hadn't attacked my fuel lines. But as everyone said, find out exactly what is wrong. Find a good mechanic who is nice enough to check it out for free. I was in the same boat, giving brother car(until it got the fuel leak) and getting a new car. Some advice, I don't know how old you are, but am guessing around my age..(my .02)...paying off car loans in college is NOT fun. Just be aware of all the expenses any new car you look at will cost. Because I took out a 13,000 loan, and with rent, car insurance, and the loan payments, I gotta come up with close to 900 a month. That doesn't even include gas, or costs of living. So just be wary. Good luck though. ak_honda 04-03-2004, 02:02 PM i agree with the buying a used car instead of a new one. i got my focus as a used car, it was a 2000 with 17,000 miles on it, it was only ever used a demo car so i was the first actual owner. never had any problems with it *but it's in the graveyard now, fell asleep driving home, ran into a pole and totalled the entire front ent so it would of been too expensive to get fixed* but the accord i have was my parents and it was bought used also and has been running great ever since then. sometimes used IS best, better price and if you're lucky had a great owner before you that really took care of it. :) good luck though with everything. let us know what you do. vBulletin®, Copyright ©2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
