I have a 89 Legacy RS and the cooling fans stay on all the time the car is running and only turn off when i turn the car off, the temp gauge doesn't goto half way. Its not over heating as i've driven it for hours non stop, does anyone know what the problem could be? Just concerned cause i think its the fans running constanly that is keeping the temperature under normal. Any help appreciated

Cheers

I'm guessing you are in Australia.. Or at least not in the US (no 89 Legacies in the US)....So because of that I am not sure if your sensor is in the same place as the USDM models.. anyway.. theres a sensor that screws into the radiator that tells the fan to switch on at a certain temperature. I would start by checking to make sure that switch still functions properly... probably not terribly expensive to replace

Does the fan not run off the coolant temp sensor? and i think that the US versions of the RS started in 90 i'm only assuming but i'm from New Zealand. CHeers for your reply, i'll check that out.

Ok i haven't got a sensor in my radiator and the fans run off the Coolant temp sensor, now they are hard to get to does anyone know and easy way to get to it? without removing much, because the PCV hoses are in the way and the intake manifold is also in the way.

Cheers

Hi there. I live in AKL NZ and I have had the same prob. I replaced my coolant termperature sensor and all was fine. Does your check engine light come on at all? Mine did.
It was a PITA to change. I have some pictures if you like. The first thing I would do first would be to reset the ECU.
I have a Subaru Legacy 1989 RS Sedan also.
