once años después desde que el primer McLaren F1 fuera construido, la empresa McLaren Cars está lanzando una última edición sin registrar del auto más rápido del mundo. Será vendida al público a un precio récord de 1.89 millones de dólares.

Kind of old news at this point:

The Autoweek article linked in that thread is a nice read.

I'm curious as to the details on #65. When was it produced, and why was it not registered ?

Peloton25
03-29-2004, 05:27 PM
Drawing from memory here, I think it was built towards the end of the 1997 production cycle. It wasn't nearly the last one produced, it's just the last unregistered example.

My guess is that McLaren Cars wanted something to put in the showroom in place of Carl Beal's which was removed at about the same time. Towards the end of production, sadly there weren't a lot of buyers for $1,000,000 cars. I'd assume they've had some offers on the car over the years, but I doubt they were hurting to sell it from a money standpoint.

Carl Beals? Cool. New info. Thanks. Btw, did you ever find out the chassis # of the red one that was there?

Peloton25
03-29-2004, 07:11 PM
No clue on the red one. The source on the photo didn't have any more info.

As for the Carl Beal comment - If you go back and look at the posts made about that car by cbeal, F1WRENCH, or Will69Camaro, one of them mentions that he bought the car from their showroom in 1997. I can only assume then that his was the silver F1 sitting in the McLaren showroom from the time it was built in 1995 until 1997 when he bought it.

cool. I must have missed that, thanks. So some of the pix that i may hae filed as 65 could be Mr. Beals?

Peloton25
03-29-2004, 10:27 PM
Most definitely could be. It would of course depend on the age of the photo, but I doubt there are many that have made it on the web from before 1997 so it's a safe bet that most are #065.

I wonder which car was there pre-1995. Obviously that unknown red one spent some time there. If it were my decision, I'd have left the Clinic Model in there - I'm guessing 90% of visitors wouldn't have really known any better.

If he bought it from the showroom in 1997, how come it says "For almost a decade, chassis No. 65 has been window dressing in McLaren’s flagship showroom on London’s Park Lane." in the Autoweek article. That would mean #65 has been there since maybe 1995.

Peloton25

As I stated above, chassis #065 was produced in 1997, so there's no chance that it could have been displayed in the showroom prior to that year. I had thought it was one of the last '97 road cars produced, but in actuality, there were 6 more completed after it as well as the two customer GTs in 1997.

I liken that "For almost a decade..." statement to the claim from McLaren that they only produced 100 F1s when in fact it was 106, or that all five F1 LMs were painted orange when their own material and several knowledgeable sources have confirmed the existence of the two black ones.

the little i know, chassis #065 was the 52nd car built in 1997 painted in Magnesium Silver, so I agree couldn´t have been display before that year.

here is the list:
#065 1997, 52nd car built, Magnesium Silver

#062 1997, 53rd car built, Magnesium Silver
#066 1997, 54th car built, Magnesium Silver
#070 1997, 55th car built, Mercedes Brilliant Silver
#074 1997, 56th car built, Magnesium Silver
#068 1997, 57th car built, Mercedes Brilliant Silver
#067 1997, 58th car built, Magnesium Silver

then the 2 GTs
54 F1 GT Black
58 F1 GT Dark Burgundy

then in 1998:
#059 1998, 59th car built, Magnesium Silver
#069 1998, 60th car built, Mercedes Brilliant Silver
#071 1998, 61st car built, Historic Orange
#072 1998, 62nd car built, Jet Black
#073 1998, 63rd car built, AMG Green Velvet
#075 1998, 64th and final F1 road car ever made, Yquem.

I always wondered..... does any of you know what this color "yquem" looks like? Anyone know the location of this car?
Also, while on the subject, what is the difference between "magnesium" silver and "Mercedes brilliant" silver? I've seen the Park Lane car and I believe it's the former? And how about "jet black" and "black 235"? Are there any pictures of such cars?

Yquem being the name for a white Bordeaux, a white french wine, Sauternes to be precise, I would guess it is basicly a white with light gold shade in it.

But it is a guess.

mini magic

mercedes brilliant silver is lighter than magnesium silver and i've never heard of a "black 235". The park lane car is magnesium silver. Yquem is a goldish color. do a google image search and the wine should come up

...according to the Autocar book car #005 was painted "black 235"

And everywhere else #005 is Jet Black, so it appears it has 2 different names.

Yquem appears to be almost the same color as Dan Kennedy's Kandy Orange F1:

Here's some examples of Chateau d'Yquem the wine:

Hello,

I didn't know that Yquem was a wine, I thinked at a coulour name.

I have a story about it :) a friend told me that he saw a F1 owner who had chosen the colour of his car like colour of his wine but I have not ask anymore because I imagine this one red and there are many !

I will try to know where the car was seen.

FYI, that chateau d'yquem whine, even a 1999 bottle, which is very young, now costs about 150 euro per bottle, don't even try to imagine what a better->older->rarer one would cost.. the whine matches the car.

Interesting story Phil - this F1 is supposed to be owned by Mansour Ojjeh's brother Aziz.

I believe the Christies Ad for #073 called it "Kandy Orange".

Maybe that Chateau d'Yquem website can send you a free sample. :D

073 wasn't the first to receive that paintjob, 038 was, it was to mymic (spelled correctly?) the colour of 075, and what a striking one that is

hey peloton, whats the source of that picture that shows the 2nd and final F1 built.

The shot comes from "Driving Ambition" - the greatest book ever written. ;)

I have a larger version of the scan which I can post later. I just don't have it hosted at the moment. There's a few other photos of the last one being built in the book, but I don't have scans of them.

#075 is also the one in the photo with the jet that is found on the poster included with the book for those who are familiar.

Also, is Driving Ambition the source of most of the info you post on the forum?

As diabloroadster points out, that photo comes from the Road&Track article. That is actually Dan Kennedy's Kandy Orange #038.

"Driving Ambition" is one of many sources. You can certainly learn an immense amount about the F1 from start to finish by reading that book. There are lots of other sources as well including various magazines and websites, along with the great people who post here past and present. I have the ability to retain things I read very well and I also take good notes so it makes it easy to refer back to things. If you don't have a copy of the great book though, I'd suggest getting one now that the reprint is out and the price has come back to sane levels. Amazon.com has used and new copies available for around $50.

This is the jet shot I was referring to from the DA poster btw:

Incidently that particular jet is a training aircraft, the RAF Hawk, as used by the Red Arrows display team.
