looses power when accelerating 5-speed

This just started happening in my 93 mx6 standard transmission v4, first symptoms were a violent chugging when starting in first gear, like the car was trying to start in too high a gear. This happens occationally.

Next when I was either in any of the first three gears and accelerating I'd loose power like I all of a sudden wasn't getting gas.

I've replaced plugs, wires, fuel filter, air filter etc. cleaned fuel injector, new distributor cap.

I've now noticed it happens when I have less than a half tank of gas. Maybe a fuel pump problem? A sensor?

Anyone with similar experience. I'd like to point a mechanic to a possible problem rather than have them replace a hundred things before diagnosing it.

Oh yea, the engine light doesn't stay on long enough to get it diagnosed.

All help appreciated
Thanks
David

could it be a slipping clutch?

Fuel pump?
My sisters golf was acting the same way and we ended up changing most of what you've already changed.
If you have no/zero success I would just take it to a mechanic.
Good Luck.

i dunno if its the same thing but my first car did something like that, it was a ford contour, they had to run it through a computer, it turned out to be some switch in the tranny it would go like it was in too high a gear, or lose power, it was crazy
