10K Dollars to build a Ricer, Import or a Sleeper1Quick91 03-17-2004, 03:25 PM Ok let's try a spend on those reality TV shows... You are given 10K to build the best street car you can, without going over the 10K what would you build. You will have to buy your car with the 10K budget as well. My Choice is a 1989-1993 Fox Body Mustang I would do all the labor myself to cut costs. Purchase price of car $3000.00 FRPP GT40 5.0L Long Block 320HP $3200.00 GT40 Intake Manifold $ 400.00 Art Car Street Strip AOD $1200.00 3000 RPM Stall $ 300.00 Eibach Drag Springs $ 250.00 ZEX 125 Nitrous Kit $ 500.00 Diablo Custom Burn Chip $ 450.00 FRPP 4:11 Rear Gears $ 150.00 DYNO TIME $ 150.00 NITTO Drag Slicks $ 400.00 Total Cost $10,000.00 This combination according to DYNO 2000 will put out 480 HP with the Juice and run 11:10 sec @ 122mph kittedb18bt 03-17-2004, 03:35 PM nice race you posted there. you lost me when you stated "reality tv" somewhere near the top, i lost interest. StangNut86 03-17-2004, 03:44 PM i like how this guy thinks! fox-bodies forever! they're some of the best street/strip cars you can buy imo. medium weight, as much power as you want, good looks, flexible for customization. StangNut86 03-17-2004, 03:45 PM and with that statement, let the flame-war begin =\ mynismo 03-17-2004, 03:58 PM since im completely biased towards 240s.... and am really in the process of building a daily driver racer thats a lil riced out, here's what im doing: 5100 - 240sx with sr20det that's somewhat modded 700 - greddy vspl fmic 100 - custom hotpipe 150 - turbo xs h-rfl bov 250 - lsd 150 - custom 3" downpipe 40 - 3" test pipe 250 - custom 3" catback exhaust 70 - megan racing muffler 300 - apexi safc ii 450 - apexi avcr boost controller 800 - used tein ha's 800 - silvia front end 1700 - body work w/ signal orange paint there you go.... its just about worthy of being a show car and run's very high 12's. ok i went a tad beyond the 10k limit but things happen like you buy the car off the hilljack and need to do above and beyond what was desired.... of course you can always knock off the tein's, sil front end and paint job and build up the engine to run high 11's.... without joining the 5.0 bandwagon youngvr4 03-17-2004, 04:25 PM i always thought and still do think the cheapest and fastest way to go is the eagle talon 1st gen/eclipse. buy one for 2 or 3 grand, 2 or 3 grand for turbo upgrade, with b/c, downpipe, exh, cold air intake, fuel injectors, all the goodies buy the time you reach 10 grand you should be in low 11's and high 10's. its insane how many times i've seen this car run low 10's and 9's, and aftermaket is forever with those cars. MR2Driver 03-17-2004, 04:41 PM 1993 MR2 Turbo ~4500 KO Racing TKO exhaust ~600 KO Racing Street Brawler T3/T4 Turbo Kit ~2300 Apex-I Intake ~50 Greddy Intercooler w/ Spal Fans ~850 550cc Fuel Injector System ~500 Blitz Dual Solenoid Boost Controller ~350 Billwot FCD ~50 You've got a solid 11's car w/ over 350RWHP and $800 to spend on better tires, brakes, sched maintenance, an AFC or Gauges, asthetics, etc... That looks better and handles better than the 5.0 and the DSM. SpaceManSpiff 03-17-2004, 04:57 PM Either a first gen DSM built around a 20g (low 11s), build fox body, or maybe a really used ferrari (slow, but nothing beats its sex appeal for 10 grand.) flylwsi 03-17-2004, 05:48 PM for fun, a 3rd gen prelude (like mine) car, about 2k turbo h22 swap 7k (that's a built h22) suspension 600 cheap 15" rims and sticky tires 400 there's 10k. and it's flat black, sleeper. it'll run 12's or lower. for a domestic, i'd buy an s-10. 94 regular cab, 2wd 3k built 350 / 5 speed / camaro rear end 4k (that would include the rear suspension, so it's dropped now) front suspension 200 c5 corvette rims f/r from mallet (stock take offs with lllooooowww miles) 1500 that will definitely run in the 11's. carrrnuttt 03-17-2004, 05:50 PM How about this guys: 1991-1992 Sentra body (coupe, sedan) = $400.00 (probably cheaper) 1991-1997 Sentra SE-R/Infiniti G20/200SX SE-R tranny, axles, and ECU = $500.00 (I'm actually overestimating, depending on year of component) JDM SR20DET AWD/FWD Version = $2700.00 (The GTi-R version, which has more power stock, and holds more power stock..."lesser" versions go for about $1800.00) Jim Wolf ECU tuning = $400.00 Peripherals (fuel supply, air filter, oil filter, brakes, tires, supension etc., to get the car running good) = $5000.00 (I'm being generous, I'm sure a smart buyer will spend a LOT less than this) Total = $9000.00 for a 12-second, absolute sleeper To be truthful, less cash than this has been spent to go faster, but I'm underestimating. Check out how much this car sold for: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2454089596&category=6401 And that car has a T25 (aka T-too-small), which means it has the "lesser" SR20DET. The GTi-R has a T28 stock. carrrnuttt 03-17-2004, 05:56 PM flywsi: You'll like this, then: http://www.teaminterlude.com/3rdGenH22Swap.asp flylwsi 03-17-2004, 06:00 PM don't think i don't know about it... ;) -Josh- 03-17-2004, 07:07 PM hmmmmm.. K prices may be a little inexact but they are pretty close. mid to high mileage 85 Regal T-Type $3000 Rebuild Turbo- $1000 Intercooler from GN/T-Type parts catalog- $1200 Rebuild kit for engine- $1000 Rebuild Kit for Tranny(Th200)- $400 Hell you can stop there with $3,400 left, and without a bov and aftermarket exhaust, no one would know the difference. Actually, this isn't a bad idea for somebody on a limited budget like me(who will only buy Buick anyway)... 2000LS1Z28 03-17-2004, 07:19 PM Z28 Josh, no offense but you will be hard pressed to find a Buick T Type for $3K. In fact the cheapest i've seen them is like $6K. It's an awesome car though. I'd probably just build a 1st gen Talon (Basically it's an Eclipse). They aren't too reliable, but abnormally easy to mod (Read Import Tuner where they added over 100 whp with a little over a thousand dollars in mods). Larger turbo (TD 04), injector, stand alone fuel management system, B.O.V., catback exh., downpipe, larger intercooler, cold air intake, and i'd probably see an 11 sec. time slip. Well wait a sec., we are talking about me driving. Make that a 12 sec. pass. flylwsi 03-17-2004, 07:23 PM exactly... the dsm is a great car to start with. i've got a friend with 3k into his, including the car, and it's low 13's it's almost too easy... i like taking something not super fast and changing it up... the s10 would be cool... or doing an sr20det conversion in an old nissan hardbody pickup... or supra swap into a toyota pickup... those would be sick... -The Stig- 03-17-2004, 08:51 PM 1972 Datsun 240z - $2,700 SR20DET & 5 Speed - $4,000 (Tuned to 400hp) Suspension & Brakes - $800 Interior upgrades - $800 (gauges, seats, nick-nacks) Paint & Body - $1,500 $9,500 Specs: 2000lb Car with close to 350rwhp. In fact the cheapest i've seen them is like $6K. It's an awesome car though. Actually there was one right near me for 2500, it needs a lot of interior work done to it though, the body is in pretty good shape. But with 70K+ miles driven god knows how hard, I'm not sure if it would be a wise investement, which is why i'm rebuilding my old Buick. There are some for that price if you look hard enough(like me), but they usually need a lot of TLC like the things i described would need to be done in my previous post. fearsomefairmont 03-18-2004, 01:46 AM I can't believe any of you guys labor under the idea that the best way to get a real fast car for cheap is with a front wheel drive machine. The fundamental premise of an accelerating car is weight transfer off of the front wheels, unless drastic measures are taken (out of the scope of this price range) there is no way to compete with a good rear wheel drive machine. Here is the recipe: 1978 Fairmont 2-dr (my car) $600 (no motor or trans) 351 windsor long block core motor $300 Cleveland 4v heads w/roller springs, big valves - $500 Machine work on motor/ heads $600 Forged crank, h-beam rods, forged pistons $1500 Head gaskets, bearings, etc $300 Big roller cam and roller lifters $550 Bush Performance single plane high rise intake $300 Holley 850 cfm double pumper w/mech secondaries $500 Long tube large diameter headers $200 MSD ignition system $600 (w/distributor) Built C6 transmission w/3000 stall converter $1100 Ford 9 inch rearend w/ 4.30's $1000 Some sort of drag radials+wheels $1000 All right, this includes virtually everything from the ground up for this car, which is my current in progress setup. It looks dead stock except for buckets in front, 6 point cage, and different wheels The output of a friend's similar motor is around 450+ hp (car weight is 2400 lbs) and with good internals will handle 200 hp NOS shot. Without NOS, this car will run deep into the tens. On spray, 9's are possible. Now please, don't piddle around with anything else. If any ricers would like to come get minced they can feel free at anytime. I think the reluctance to build one of these machines is also due to the fact that 99% of ricers have never built a motor or fabricated their own turbo system. Maybe, one day, they will see the light. Till then, they will see only my taillights :~) fearsomefairmont 03-18-2004, 01:56 AM I also forgot something else, guys, the setup above WELL below the necessary 10k limit, and leaves excess cash for a huge NOS kit or perhaps a twin turbo setup using junkyard t3's, which with adjustable boost control would make an excellent daily driver. May imports burn in hell forever..... -The Stig- 03-18-2004, 02:51 AM You forgot to add in the price of full roller rocker arms. So factor in another $300 for those. But your closed mindedness will get you in trouble some day. Unless you're John Force, there will always be somebody faster. Also, I find it hard to believe anything from Ford that was RWD and with a Factory V8 in 1978 was 2400lbs. It's not like it's based off the Fox Body chassis either... that didn't come around till 1979. fearsomefairmont 03-18-2004, 09:01 AM Sorry, You are right, I forgot price of roller rockers, valve covers, etc. But here is one of the websites where I got some specs, as well as the factory ford repair manual: http://www.yonderway.com/sleepers/foxspecs.shtml I have the 1978 2 dr Fairmont, which when the rear and front bench seats are dumped in favor of two buckets and various other crap is removed the weight is indeed around that figure. I also forgot that a cage and the 9 inch rearend adds some weight though. Additional weight could be lost with a manual trans such as a Tremec TKO and aluminum heads, but more money then. Anyways, the point is not to be closed minded but to try and build the most bang for the buck. I am a college student right now, don't have alot of cash, so anything I can do make speed for cheap I will and to me this is the best way. So, thanks for the input. flylwsi 03-18-2004, 12:35 PM i love that we shouldn't have an interest in fwd cars because they're not the fastest. who are you to tell us that we shouldn't want to own a fwd car? i'm well aware that a rwd car is faster for the same money, and noted that, by being interested in rwd buildups as well... but it's getting old hearing people tell fwd enthusiasts to not like them b/c they're "not fast". 2000LS1Z28 03-18-2004, 12:40 PM Ahh i was talking about an AWD car. AWD cars are killer on launches. Have you ever raced a modified Eclipse GSX w/ a good driver Fairmount? RACER D12 03-18-2004, 04:03 PM BMW E30 325ci-1500 (could get them for less but will be beat) Rebulid engine for boost-2500 Turbo kit-2000? Nice Coilovers-2000 Total-8000 (Probably could do it for less) 2000 left for some nice wide rubbers out back. Should leave you with a 2600lbs(est) car with 350+hp that runs 12s. youngvr4 03-18-2004, 04:45 PM even eclipse gs-t (frontwheel drive)with less than 10 grand will easily run low 11's. yes rwd is better but depending on the car, i guess the ? was whats easy to modifiy with 10 grand. and eclipse is been mention a few times already, for 10 grand the only thing eclipse is gonna be burning is rubber and your domestic will burn in hell :evillol: just playing, it all depends. this guy pulled of a 11.1 with his mods. note: there are different ways of upgrading, of course this is just one of them. Owner: Roy Narvaez Residence: South Gate, California Car: 1995 Mitsubishi Eclipse Turbo Engine: Inline Four Mods: The internal engine mods include a 1991 six-bolt block, ported head with three-angle valve job from Road/Race Service, Mavrick Motorsports knife-edged and lightened crank, Eagle rods, JE pistons, Kibble White dual-valve springs, ARP fasteners, and Fidanza adjustable cam gears. A Turbonetics T66 ball-bearing turbo, GT Fabrications custom exhaust and intake manifold, Spearco front-mount intercooler, Accufab 75mm throttle body and a Magnaflow race exhaust are some of the external engine components. StopTech 12.9-inch rotors with four-piston calipers up front and stock rotors and calipers in the rear. Fast Fasts: First year as a competitor in USCC. His other cars include a 1992 AWD Eagle Talon, 1986 GMC 4x4 i believe th fastest time for a eclipse is 8.769 unless its been beat since Ace$nyper 03-18-2004, 05:36 PM hmm this is cool read i'm surprized to see noone has pulled out the rx-7s yet for small amounts they can fly like mofos. FC rx seven turbo 2 2K build up motor for loads of boost 4k rims tires 1k 2k awesome suspension fully hooked up then also have a G for seats nice inside stuff fixing dents etc in 2k rx-7 good way to spend 10k IMO Mediocrity 03-18-2004, 07:13 PM 8.769 is a 91 Talon, youngvr4 :P Same concept though. RACER D12 03-18-2004, 07:59 PM I dont know if you could get the Fwd eclipse to run 11s with just 10k. Do the Fwd ones even have turbo stock? Im guessing cause its called GS-T it must. If they do then maybe, but if not I dont see it happening easily. I mean their heavy and it would need major suspension work to conteract all that weight transfer. Plus because of F&F lots of people want them which has driven up their price. Not the best bang for the buck if you ask me. If I was going to go FWD I think I would go GTI, Sentra SE-R, or some honda. fearsomefairmont 03-19-2004, 01:28 AM For the record, no I have not raced a good AWD car such as an Eclipse GSX or such. I would but they never show up at the strip, where you can actually race legally and where you get a timeslip to actually PROVE what your car is capable of. I am not implying imports or FWD's aren't fast but it is harder to get them so. And, imports would make a better daily driver and get better gas mileage. It is all about trade-offs. fatninja19 03-19-2004, 04:52 AM For the record, no I have not raced a good AWD car such as an Eclipse GSX or such.
