Instrument panel lights on my 1991 Cherokee aren't working. I have checked all the bulbs in the panel and the connection board for any breaks. All of those pass inspection. I installed a new headlight switch which provides dimmer control for the instrument panel lights. I am continuing to blow a 15 amp fuse for the circuit which controls headlights, parking and tail lights, warning buzzer and dimmer control on instrument panel. The 5 amp fuse for the instrument panel lights continues to function. Only the 15 amp fuse is blowing. All main fuses under the hood are fine and all bulbs for exterior lamps are fine. What might I be missing to check into this electrial problem?

I would make sure that that switch isnt shorted somewhere. I know the wires used in that circuit are small - might be a break somewhere. Also check your relays as well. Dont know what else to tell you as the instrument lights are controlled by the headlight switch.

Where should I look for the relays? Are those like an inline fuse or the old teletype key configuration? Thanks for your help.

Should be under the hood. Probably in the PDC.
Got a manual? If not get a Chiltons for the wiring.

I've got the Chilton's Manual. I did check the fuses under the hood in the power distribution box. All of those were operational. Is it possible the new headlight switch I installed needs an additional ground? The only connections are the power source wire in the back and the wiring harness to feed all the functions of the switch. Since it's just sanwiched in between the plastic dash, maybe the frame of the switch needs to have a separate ground wire attached to it.

Sounds like you have TOO MANY grounds!
Did you use the factory harness to plug into the switch? I would bet its in that switch. Did it blow fuses before the change?

I did use the factory harness to plug in the new switch. I don't know if the 15 amp fuse was blowing previously. The problem began when I pulled the headlight switch on a week ago. Headlights worked, but no instrument lights. I assumed the switch was the problem. Ordered a new one and installed it using factory harness. Maybe not all of the plugs on the switch should be plugged into the wiring harness.

I had the same thing happen to me only a couple weeks ago. I pulled headlight nob and headlights came on, but no dash lights and no running lights. I found that the fuse had blown, so I replaced it. The next time I tried to use it the fuse blew again, but this time I smelled what I presume to be an electrical short. I haven't had a chance to track it down yet. Have you solved your issue? I'd be interested in what you've found.

P.S. I also found this thread in the Cherokee fourm "91' XJ Electrical Problem". This person ended up accidentally connected two wires that were previously not connected while installing a new stereo.
