A friend of mine has a 2000 Dodge Neon that needs a new tensioner pulley. The mechanic says that it's a part on neons that commonly breaks down, and the part can only be ordered from the dealership. We're not quite familiar with auto parts and where to get them, but is there some other place you can commonly get parts like this?

Unfortunately, some parts are dealer-only :( . However, to make sure you can always simply just call up some of the local auto-parts stores in your areas (i.e. AutoZone, PepBoys, NAPA, etc.) and ask for a tensioner pulley for a 2000 Dodge Neon.

thats crap, ive heard of the timing belt tensioner breaking, but not the pulley

Um, I had a tensioner pulley break (shatter, more like it) while I was on the E-way in my '98 Intrepid... took the bearing, spacer, and retainer with it; melted the belt and snapped it, and had enough heat to bend the pin that it rides on. Anything is possible.

When replacing a snapped timing belt on a '97 Neon SOHC, I bought a timing belt kit that included the tensioner pulley. The old pulley had play in the bearings compared to the new one. The tensioner still worked fine, but I had to play with the adjustment a little to get right. It required about 1 ft/lb more torque than the book said; could be my torque wrench. Anyone had similar experiences with the tensioner?
