88 Cherokee Gas Guage not working???Bmaintz 03-11-2004, 09:30 PM New to the Forum & need your HELP.... I pulled the instrument cluster & checked the ohms on harness back to gas tank sender, I had 45 ohms, put 5 gals in it & had 60 ohms... The ohms will go up & down as you move the Jeep around.... I am assuming that the Sender Unit is OK.... Have cleaned all contact on cluster, even removed the gas guage & cleaned its contacts... The cluster is getting a good ground... The dash lights work OK.... Does the large Gas Guages go bad, the needle seemed stiff to move.... Many Thanks, Bob [XR]STUD 04-07-2004, 08:17 PM usually a gas gauge works or it doesn't...no in between....remove the wire from the sending unit at the tank...with the key on, have someone watch the gauge while you touch the wire to a good ground, like the body or frame...the gauge should go right up to full or past full...it only takes a couple seconds...if it does this, everything is working back to the tank...check for bad ground connections at the sending unit in the top of the tank....remember, the gauge has low voltage through it anytime the key is on....the change in gauge indication is through variable resistance to ground at the tank....make sure you dont use the fuel pump power wire for this test...pump wire will have around 12 volts or more....gauge wire will have around 5 volts....good luck! Bmaintz 04-07-2004, 08:34 PM Thanks, Turns out that the Cherokee had a salvage title so we made the auction take it back plus $400 for my trouble...
