My daughter was driving it in town. Stoped for traffic and the engine stoped. No warning or stuter. Won't start. Starter spins engine well. I think I hear the fuelpump initialize when ignition turned on (with my head in the trunk).
3.8L engine. Have not had time to look further.
Is there any inside info on what to look for first (and how) on these engines?
I supose I could pull a plug and look for a spark with it grounded to the exaust manifold as I have done on much older cars. But with computers and fuel injection, I am not sure it is a good idea.
I supose I had better read my Haynes manual.
Even if it is something I can't fix (not hard to believe) I would like to have a good idea what is going on before it goes to the shop ($).
Is there a circuit breaker I can reset incase the fuel pump is dead?
I probably have at least 2 weeks to get it fixed.

The car just reached 60K miles so the timing belt should be OK (right?).
Just in case, is this (3.8L V6) a non interference engine?

OK, it has a timing chain so no problem there.
I want to remove a spark plug (any spark plug) to see if I have spark or compresion. How do I unplug the wire? It has some sort of metal thing wraped around the boot (I guess). Do I pull on the metal thing or the end of the boot or what?

Maybe the crank sensor. Buddy of mine had the same thing happen to him and turned out to be it.
Maybe something as simple as a loose ground wire somewhere. Also check for a blown fuse... my.02 cents

Thanks burnM,
I hadn't considered the crank sensor. The fuses are fine.

It was runing perfectly as always and then shut off as if the ignition turned off. No warning. No sign of life. The starter spins the engine perfectly.
If it was a lose connection I would expect it to be intermitant, at least at first. I'll bet on the crank sensor.
If I was certain, I would look into repairing it myself. As it is, I will have it towed to my friendly Buick dealership and let Mr. Goodwrench have a crack at it. I'll have the recall work done at the same time.

Mr. Goodwrench is befudled. Natuarally it runs fine without hesitation or error codes for him. :<
Fotunatly we won't need the Regal for at least a week.
I asked him if the crank or cam position sensors ever fail intermitantly and he said yes. I asked if that failure would leave an error code and he said not always. Aparently you have to spin the starter/engine for a while before a code will be stored and we avoided doing so for more than perhaps 5 seconds.

Update:
After eight days, and 12 gallons of gas, Mr. Goodwrench gave up. They detailed the car a bit, did the steering recall thing, and charged us $117.
I will be driving it to work (2.2 miles ) and back for awhile while my wife drives my 94 Sundance. I will avoid driving it more than 10 miles from the dealership to minimize the cost of towing.

I thought you should know I had a crank position sensor problem the occurred intermitently for about a year before I was able to figure it out with the help of this site. My car would go for months with out a problem and then just stall, usually when my wife was driving. If it happens again I would check into that. Part was about $30.
