my s-10 problems
03-07-2004, 09:23 AM
I purchased this truck from my friends dad in 2000 it was in great shape with all service records and only 60,000 miles.I have put another 40,000 miles on it and had no problems until recently. At first it seemed as though the problems starting were only when the temperature was warm but now several weeks later it will hardly start at all even at cold start.Sometimes I try for hours and it will not start then it will start and run fine. The truck is a 93 s-10 ext-cab with a 2.8l v6.I have changed the coil and plugs which were just a shot in the dark suggested by a co-worker.My gut tells me it is fuel related.I have observed the injectors and it doesn't seem as though they are injecting frequently enough.I saw one quick burst of fuel at the first turn of the key but then after several more attempts I never saw another spray. Is this common? Also I have read other posts and yes I do plan to change the oil pressure sensor today.Any help solving this problem GREATLY appreciated.I feel it is minor given the truck has been very well maintained but just can't put my finger on it. I am at wits end and if I fix it soon it will be sold to the highest bidder maybe on ebay! :banghead: :banghead:

I purchased a '93 S10 extend cab v6 2.8L from a guy who fixes and sells S10s...
First the fuel was low and almost out when I drove it home. When I parked it and the guy took his license plate off there was a hum sound coming from the fuel tank -- fuel pump. I called the guy and he said it should shut off on its own. The next day the battery was dead so I put a new Walmart yellow $58 or so battery in and my new plate for the drive to the gas station. After 2 days of use it had a starting problem that was getting worse. At first it seemed normal that the truck started on the second try but not the first... it would start in the morning when its cold but just turn over and I needed to use some starting fluid spray to get it going. I told the guy I bought it from that I had a problem and he replaced the fuel pump, but the problem is back...

It seems the truck turns over but doesn't spray fuel in at startup, but once it runs it will run fairly well -- except possibly a bit rough yet this is my first v6 since all other vehicles I've had are 4-cyl. I put a bottle of fuel injector cleaner in the gas tank on my fuel up right after getting the truck back after the new fuel pump was put in... then bought a new can of engine start spray since my other can was at home.

I can start it if I have the engine start spray, otherwise it just turns over. I'll probably have a mechanic deal with it, but I'd appreciate some input.

I took the truck in to a shop. They found that the fuel pump relay was bad. They put a new one on and tightened up a few wires. It cost about $130 when the part itself was about $20... oh well, its fixed.
Hmmm... Is it normal for the truck to not have power steering for the first few seconds of driving?... or for the oil pressure to flutter along with a constant little flutter chirp while the engine is running (easy noise to cover up by turning on the radio)?... not dependant on being in gear or driving.
