Noise from Back

There is a scraping noise from the rear of the '98 GC. It's most noticable at speeds over 35pmh. Sounds kind of like a brake pad that's worn through to the metal. Anyway, brakes are good. Bled them just in case... U-joints are new. Changed fluid in diff (35). The fluid that came out of the diff was "glittery" for lack of a better word. With the rear supported on the axle I can lift the right wheel maybe .025" (didn't take the tire off and try to measure) and I get a clunk sound at the top of the travel. The left wheel doesn't move as much and doesn't hit with any appreciable sound. I've felt each end of the axle housing near the brale backuing plate after driving and neither end feels hot. Is the right side showing too much play? Is it time for wheel bearings? If so, are the bearings pressed on the axle or in the housing, and how much trouble to replace? Thanks in advance!

Hi!

I had my 1997 Grand Cher. checked at 60K, and they found a problem with my right rear axle bearing. Later inspection and 3 days later I had a $2600 bill, a new housing, gears, and other parts. Ouch!! I'm trying to get Mfgr. to cover costs. This should wear out in routine driving.
