Hi, My 95 JGC has 83K on it.
I love it and this is a real "first problem" for me.
The Overdrive light is on a lot.
Mostly when the car is cold.
I am then driving in what is called "limp home mode" which is only 2nd gear and reverse.
I took it to a 5 Star Dealer for repairs.
They replaced the Transmission Module.
500 + dollars.
Next day, same thing...
Took it back, they then changed solenoids and transducers in the transmission.
Paid the 600+ bill, had the Service Porter drive the car to me at the dealership door, SAME THING!!!!
I was a nutcase and 1200. poorer!
They wanted to keep it again.
needless to say, my confidence is shot at that particular service center.
Thay refunded nearly all of my money,(not willingly) as they had opbviously replaced uneeded parts...
Now what???
I have only seen this problem posted 2 times on other sites, and both times it did involve the 1995 Jeep Grand Cherokee.
The transmission fluid is now new, and I would think that the Jeep dealer knew to use only a Chrysler fluid, as I have read that these Jeeps are pretty particular.
I know there is bookoo talent on these boards,
Someone help me please!!!!!

I am off to work now, and will check back later.
have a great day everyone, and Thank you in advance!

Obviously a wiring problem. There are 2 places I have seen mentioned before. One is where main harness from ECM passes through firewall.
The other was from harness rubbing against A/C line. Condensation over time wore through.
Please let us all know what solution is

Thank you tdenkler, I now have a starting point that makes sense!
I could sure use a referral to a reputable Auto Electrician in the North Seattle area if anyone knows of one? It can be a bit intimidating being a female with car troubles!

I am a bit fearful of taking the Jeep back to the 5 Star, as we did not part on very good terms!
The Techs were wonderful, all 4 of them.
They kept scratching their heads in disbelief....
It was the Service Manager who despises me now, as I supposedly threw his cash flow off at the beginning of the month, by insisting on my money back.

Thanks again...

TD......I hae a '94 JGC with security alarm problems. Sometimes you have to disconnect the battery for 30 minutes or so and it seems to reset and you can start the car. Sometimes putting the key in the drivers side door and turning it a couple of times will reset it and you can start the car. Also, somtimes you can put the key in the rear liftgate door and turn it a couple of times and it will eventually restart. However, those things used to work and now jump starting the battery has come into play. Jump starting will sometimes start the car.
This is really frustrating and am about to my wits end. I have already paid $150 for towing and the mechanic telling me about resetting the driver's door lock....but that doesn't seem to work well anymore.
Anyway......you got any other ideas?
Thanks,
Kaobb

Your "door lock solenoids" are worn(wearing) out. You have one at each key lock(2 front, tailgate) As long as ONE of them work, you can manually disarm security system. They are cheap $20 at www.jeep-parts-dealer.com, but a pain to get to replace. Gotta pull door panel.
Easiest thing is to buy remote off Ebay @$25-40.
Here's programming procedure:

1. Put key in ign. Leave in off.
2. Open driver door, leave open throughout.
3. Manually push door lock button to "lock" position, not using electric
door locks, just manually push lock button.
4. Turn ign to "run" position.
5. Within 20 seconds, hold lock button on remote till remote LED flashes
twice and electric door locks cycle on /off.
6. Within 20 seconds, push manual door lock back to "lock" position and
press "lock" button on 2nd remote till it flashes twice and locks cycle
again.
7. Turn ign key to "off" position within 20 seconds.

Try both remotes and see if they work.

Hope this helps,

Jumping/replacing battery should not have any effect. If you try key again after that, then key is disabling alarm in one of the "door lock solenoids"

Here's a test for ALL componeents of alarm system to see what works or not:

To check all components on alarm system, do the following:

Another thing, If you want to test ALL your security alarm components, do the following:
>1. Turn key to acc, off, acc, off, acc, off. remove key. You are now in "diagnostic" mode.
>Each time you test a component of security system, horn will beep once if it works.
Has to have at least 30 seconds between "events".
>Example, open door, should beep once, wait at least 30 seconds, close door, should beep once.
>Do all doors, tailgate, hood, should all beep once when you open and shut.
>Next, put key in each key lock cylinder(2 doors and tailgate) turning to "unlock",
should beep, back to "lock", should beep again. Remember to wait 30 sec between each try.
Anything that doesn't beep either is bad sendor, switch, or SAM relay or computer.
>Put key back in ign and turn to run, should hear 1 beep. This tells you computer recognizes
ign switch, and all inputs and then takes you out of "diagnostic" mode.

Reason you have to wait 30 seconds between "events" is to let the "illuminated entry" relay
to time out. Or, remove relay till done. Relay is well hidden. It's in false bottom of glove box.
Bottom rightmost relay.

Tom, this is great information. I have a question about your comment about buying a remote off of Ebay. I have one remote (for sure maybe 2 it's my daughter's car at college) but it does not seem to work. I have replaced batteries and still had no effect on it operating. Is this the remote you are reffering to? Do I need 2 remotes? Should I buy new ones from the dealer?
Thanks again for your help!

Does red "LED" light when you press either button?
Your remote should look like this one:

If LED lights, do the programming procedure in earlier thread.
Please let me know if works

Tom, thanks for all this great info. My daughter will be coming home on Thursday and I will let you know then if the remote LED lights up. BTW, they (she has 2) look just like the one on Ebay.

Kevin

Hey tdenkler, when i got my 93 JGC ltd. it came with a single button remote, have you ever seen this on other 93 jeeps. If the security comes on,like when you re-attach the battery, pressing the single button remote shuts it off. I've tried the 2 button remotes, tried the programming procedures, both red leds blink twice but no success. Also the lock / unlock switch below the window switches only unlocks the doors but not relock them. Could this be causing the 2 button remotes not to program, or because i originally have the single button remote there's no possible change

Poopy! I'm moving. I boxed up my manuals and can't find em LOL.
There is an early 93 remote that is totally different from later one. I remember that the alarm board and connector in the dome lamp housing are different also.
I don't think you can find one of these. They are rare. Same principle. It's an infrared remote also.
Came on 93's that had serial number ending below 500000. Above had the later remote.
I will be at new location this weekend and will dig out manual and check.
just hang on.

Tom, sorry it took so long for me to respond. My daughter didn't come home during spring break but she came home for Easter. Anyway, her car would not start at school so she got a new battery. Amazingly the security system for now is working fine. I don't understand it and I don't think that was the root cause. It will probably raise it's ugly head again. But for now it is A-Okay.

Glad it's working. The early remote also had a different "alarm board" and different connector in dome light housing, so you're kind of stuck with old remote. If you get time on your hands, I would search ebay/ads,etc to get a spare cause they are indeed rare.

Son, you are sure lucky to get you $ back. I spent $1500 on a rebuild with the same problem. Then found out it was the TCM. Cottman Trans. didn't care. But $500 sounds really high for that, about $225 installed at a dealer is what I paid. It fixed the problem. Are you sure they replaced the TCM? Its under the dash near your left foot. What you describe is exactly the same thing I had. Did you hear a click once in a while from that area under the dash? Sounds a little like the click of a flasher unit. I would check the TCM again. Best of luck.

I AM HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM NOW!!

My overdrive button does not seem to work and car just goes into overdrive on its own and light flashes. No rhyme or reason as to when it will do it.

It is a 94 Grand Cherokee with 84,000 miles on it.

It is in the garage and they say whoever put in the aftermarket remote starter did something to the diagnotic connector and now they can' t diagnose the problem. Maybe that IS the problem. Electrical!!!!????

I really want to just trade the thing in but can't get it running long enough for anyone to take it on a trade.

Also, noticed my 60 month battery is 72 months old. Could this be it!!!

I just want it running to trade it in and don't want to try this that and the other thing.

Any and all advise ASAP!

Same prob on my 93. Turned out to be $15 part. Vehicle speed sensor. Screws onto back of trans near output shaft. 10 minute job. It simply counts rotations. mine had a "nick" on small rotating end, it's plastic. sensor interpretted as increase of engine rpms and downshifts!

Let us know if this fixes.
