1987 Grand National QuestionEldricht 02-28-2004, 05:56 PM Is it possible to do a manual tranny swap on this car? And if so, what manual tranny is best suited for the Grand National? All help is greatly appreciated. Hypsi87 03-01-2004, 12:12 AM ahh you don't want to put a stick in a GN. Or anyother turbo car for that matter. You can't build boost with it. In 1989 when they did the Turbo Trans Am, they tried a five speed behind it. The car was a full second slower. Every time youshift, you lose boost and just have to build it back up again. Eldricht 03-01-2004, 10:41 PM Makes sense absolute sense. I know how strong the tranny is on the GN. But, is there any crate trannys that I could replace the stock one that can handle abuse such as flooring it off of the line and around or a turn, and brake stands? By the way, nice GN! =D What have you done do it? Hypsi87 03-01-2004, 11:08 PM accually the trans on the GN's are not all that strong, compared to the power a GN has. There are people who rebuild the 200-r4 and build it up pretty beefey for anywhere from 900 to 4k. Just depends on how much power you are running. Also you can get a BOP th 350 or 400. You loose the lock up fuction and the overdrive but, its is deffinatly alot stronger. That and you only loose like 2-5 MPG max. That and your might need a different drive shaft. Figuring your building a gofast car and gas mileage is not on the top of your piority list. Besides I still have a stock tranny and I power brake everytime I heat up my tires. and when I leave the line, I leave with anywhere from 4-13 PSI under my tires. (depending on which tires I have.) Thanks for the complement. I got MSD 50# injctors, te-60 turbo, SMC alcohol injection and the usuall stuff. Anyway, how much did you put into your GN? Because my brother is trying to decide on what car he wants. Hypsi87 03-02-2004, 10:34 AM yea the lock up and the overdrive will all work just fine. As for what I have in my car and how much I put in it, Here is a complete list. 1. TE-60 turbo. 2. Stock intercooler. 3. SMC dual nozzle alcohol injection. 4. MSD 50 pound per hour injectors. 5. 3" ATR downpipe. 6. Turbonetiucs *sp* mark IV deltagate. 7. Translator Plus with LS1 MAF. 8. Extender chip to match my injectors. 9. Walbro 340 hotwired pump. 10. Airbags inbetween my springs. 11. RJC powerplate. 12. Hotchkiss lower controll arms. 13. ATR pinion snubber. 14 Scanmaster 2.1 As for a price, I can not say exactly. I bought some of my stuff used and most of my other stuff I got some kick butt deals on. For example, My uncle and his buddies orderd like 5 turbos from precision turbo and engine. Well when I went to go buy mine with them so we could ship them all at once and they sold it to me brand new for 300 bucks shiped to the door. Anyway, where could I get such a rebuild? Oh, and is there any room for another turbo? Hypsi87 03-02-2004, 02:48 PM no need for another turbo. That is usually a stage block thing. Alot of people run extremely fast on a single turbo. Jason kramer, cal hartline,Jack Cotton. kratefan 03-03-2004, 09:16 PM That's awesome stuff dude. Anyway, where could I get such a rebuild? Oh, and is there any room for another turbo? How fast do you want to go? I've got a single turbo and it's run 11.04 and that's with very few runs (i.e., not a lot of tuning). After driving it on the street in race trim, I now know why people say "too fast for the street." It's not that the car is too fast, it's just that curves get REAL sharp. If you want to go much faster than, say, 10.0's, you're looking at full cages, etc. Jeff Eldricht 03-03-2004, 10:23 PM How fast do you want to go? If he could reach 9's and rely on it for daily use then that would be even better! But hey, I told him if he wants to run 9's, then he should get my Dad's old friends 1993 5.0 Cobra that runs 9.5 in the 1/4, can pass smog in my state (CA), and can be relyed on for daily use. So, it's his choice. I just hope he will get another car then the Cobra, so I can get it. :evillol: kratefan 03-07-2004, 11:51 PM 11.04 is fast, but my brother would love to reach low 10's and rely on it for daily use. Or, he could go Stage I or II. My guess is that the Cobra guy has an aftermarket block. Jeff Hypsi87 03-08-2004, 08:35 AM yea at least the caps. But he did show me pictures and ET slips showing how fast it can run. vBulletin®, Copyright ©2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
