I need to know the stock hp of a 400sb, came out of a 73 caprice has a 4 barrel stock carb and from what i've read the stock compression is 8.5:1 and that hasn't been changed yet. Just completely guessing a ball-park figure of maybe 200-250ish?

I think your right in there, if memory serves....240hp.

But, my memory isn't what it used to be.

Yeah about there. What did you plan on doing with it? Are the last four numbers on the block ID "1911"? That'll make it a 4-bolt main...not that it would be any better than a 2-bolt main. Even though the HP numbers were low, the torque level was good...and torque is usable power.

Well...im planning on; installing forged 12.1:1 pistons, rebalancing the crank. rebuilding the heads port polish 3angle valve job, pin the rocker studs if they aren't already, upgrading intake, carb, and matching cam. I already have some cheap Mr. Gasket headers that my friend gave me for free :iceslolan... get an actuall flywheel assembly throw a 5spd manual tranny on it and drop it in a 67-72 chevelle...pump a 150shot of NOS at the tracks.... thats the plan...

Woohoo!! Reminds me of my younger days :). A few years back I built up a 406 (400, bored out .030), 10.25-to-1 compression, solid cam, roller rockers, camelback 1.94's, Edelbrock Performer RPM, Holley 750 double pumper, Mallory Electronic distributor, MSD-6A box, and fenderwell headers. Backed it up with a steel flywheel and a Muncie M21, and dumped it in my 67 Nova with a 4.11 rearend and M/T 28x10.5-15 slicks. Those tires would not stick because of the 400's torque, and the "shock" of the clutch being engaged. This engine you're building may get a little costly because if you're going to use a 150-shot of nitrous, that stock crank and rods won't take that abuse for long. Aftermarket cranks and rods for this engine aren't cheap. Plus you'll have to find a suitable flywheel that'll work with this engine (the 400 is externally balanced, like a big block), as well as work with the 5-speed you plan on using. Very challenging to say the least. But it can be done. Good Luck :)

What type of gas do you plan on running with a 12.1:1 CR? Not anything that can found at a normal gas station.

Do yourself a favor, and get a good set of aftermarket heads. They can be had for cheap. maybe even just buy the edlebrock performer RPM kit.
