Wirdheim joins Jaguar Formula One team
Associated Press
Stockholm — Sweden's Bjorn Wirdheim was named third driver on Jaguar's Formula One team on Tuesday.
Wirdheim, last year's Formula 3000 champion, said he's signed a one-year contract with the team, which finished second from bottom in last year's team standings.
"This was the best solution for me this year. It gives me a chance to get into Formula One, gather experience and see what it takes," Wirdheim said at a news conference in Stockholm.
Wirdheim, 23, will be the backup driver for Jaguar's Mark Webber and Christian Klien. He'll also be able to drive the team's third car at Grand Prix practice sessions, the team said in a statement.
