girl who does not know much about cars

I have an 89 regal. I just changed the fuel filter and the maf sensor but i still keep stalling when I go into reverse. I used to stall when I stpped but that has gotten better. I thouoght it may be the time and chain or whatever but my friends say it does not stutter so it should be ok what do you think it could be. it did sit up a year. another thing is i just changed the fule filter and it stalled once since then but i did not get to try it out more.

What engine is in it? Is the service engine soon light on? If so have you pulled any codes out of it? Sorry to anwser questions with questions, but it will help.

First, I want to give props to you for doing your own work on your car! Very few women like yourself are motivated enough to try to work on their own cars!

This is being picky, but its not time and chain, but timing chain.

Anyhow, the spark plugs and wires can cause a sputter, and possibly a coil pack. Your on the right track with replacing the fuel filter, and if you say the car sat for a year, it may need some gaskets replaced.

Let us know what happens!

true, but some things dont require engine codes, like the gaskets and whatnot do, but I'm trying to eliminate the simple stuff first, then we'll ask her for more details. :)

Suggestion: Try cleaning the IAC, throttle plate, and IAC cavity. Typically, the shift to drive can be adapted through frequency of use. The shift to reverse may not be as adaptable due to lack of same. Cleaning will cause the computer to revert to more acceptable settings, where it started. Ray

Cleaning is only half the job you have to relearn the IAC after cleaning or loss of battery power.

I believe she has a 3.1 engine now we need to also know if the engine had the speed density conversion done to it. If it did the MAF sensor does nothing but sit there! Speed density removed the MAF from the engine managment system and the MAP sensor took over for the MAF's job!
