I have been searching on this board, and on the net...is the Goodyear MT/R and the Dunlop Mud Rover the ONLY M/T tires for those 17" stock wheels?? :banghead:

Pritch,

There are three bad sides to the 17" wheels the SC X came from the factory with. First is the lack of available tires in a size that will comfortably fit the X. When you do find a tire that fits, you will pay out the wazoo for it.

Second is in order to make a tire fit in the narrow wheel wells of the X, you must reduce the sidewall diameter proportionately with the rim diameter. This increases damage potential to the rim in rock crawling situations due to the fact that a 70 series tire is about as big as you will fit reasonably. For those who don't know, a 265/70R-17 means 265 mm section width, the sidewall is 70% of the section width and the rim size is 17. The higher the middle number, the taller the sidewall. I wouldn't personally drop below a 70 on the middle number, although it is possible to do so. That is my opinion so don't take it as "the rule".

The third problem is the spare tire fit. The factory spare BARELY fits and if you increase the diameter further, you will be throwing it on the roof or something.

If you have the ability, you might want to switch to a smaller wheel. I don't know what brake caliper is on the SC, so that may be something to evaluate in rim fit. I currently run 16" wheels on mine. Some here went from 16" to 15", I went the opposite way because of problems I had with mud getting captured in the brakes causing problems. It is really a personal choice based on type of off-roading and enviroment within which you off-road.

You can put factory 15" wheels on an SC, the brakes are no different.

Yeah, Nissan really did a disservice to Xterra owners with those 17's. But then offroaders aren't their target buyers.
