Anyone have pictures showing the step by step removal of the automatic transmission from a 88 528e? The short descriptive version in the Chilton manual does not give me much confidence to try this.

Thanks for any comments or suggestions.

I have often suspected that the Chilton manuals were written by Ray Charles and co-written by Stevie Wonder.
That's why I prefer Haynes manuals, or better.
I've never taken an automatic transmisssion out of a BMW, but it's probably not much different than lots of other front-engined, rwd cars. Namely, remove the drive shaft, loosen the bell housing bolts, take out the cross member, support the transmission with a jack (preferably one that has wheels, so it can roll back a few inches), pull the bell housing back, away from the motor an inch or so, and try to sneak a wrench up there to disconnect the bolts hold the torque converter to the flywheel. Move transmission back, and lower.
Oh yeah, you'll need to disconnect the lines that carry transmission fluid to the radiator to be cooled...and the gear-shift lever.
Good luck...and if you find a good manual, please recommend it. I'm going to need to buy one also.
