I'm currently in a bad situation. I need to replace my primary O2 sensor. I've got a 98 honda civic hx. Does antbody know if I can use the universal type sensors? I don't want to drop $450 on a new sensor!!!! :disappoin

There are 3-4 different types of O2 sensors, each with a different number and type of wiring coming off them. I'm assuming if you get a generic one with the same amount of wires you'll be okay. $450 sucks! Is that what a dealer told you?

Those honda bastards quoted me 280. I paid 60 for a brand new one.

Get a universal 4 wire 02 sensor, get out the soldering iron and cut the harness from the old o2 sensor and solder in the new one, should only be 50-100 for a unversal

Hey damir831 and rest,
Where did you get a brand new one for $60. I've searched high and low. Did you get the universal type? The Honda guy said the universal style end up crapping out real soon. He wasn't the one who gave me the price. What you guys think? Also, I'm no car mechanic but I'm pretty sure I can hook it up. I'm an aircraft mechanic. Is there a good book I might be able to get on how to replace the sensor. Thanks fellas

How do you guys know that the "universal" one even is the right spec? I'd love to go cheaper like that, but just getting any old O2 sensor isn't going to feed the right data to the ECU which defeats the purpose of having the O2 in the first place.

I can't remember what website I bought it from. All I know is that I called and made sure it wasn't a universal one, it cost me 70 bucks shipped. Try finding it online. If you can't find the website, there's a lot of other websites that sell it for around 110 - 130, which is a lot better than the dealership.
