Gents,

Thought I would like to share with you all a completely damaged Maui Blue 2002 G20 that I had the previlege of owning 8 months ago. This is what it looks like:

And here is the frontal shot:

After the roll-over, the crossbar on the windshield buckled and the uni-body frame twisted.

As you can see the frame above the door was also buckled. As a result, the door was unable to fully and securely close. The tires came off the wheels because it hit the bottom of a hill as it rotated 180 degrees and slid into it creating a buckling effect causing the car to tip over the hill.

I was fortunate enough to have the car write off and the insurance company replaced me with another G20. I asked for the Maui Blue colour from the dealer but they said that was the last one available in Ontario, Canada. So I decided to chose another limited availability colour, the Titanium KR4. I tend to like this colour better.

The fact that it was a big lesson learned from the accident, I also now taking care of this car with great care and pride. All I can say is, the G20 rocks! Cheers to you all and drive safe!

Umm, looks like it held up pretty well for a roll. You wouldn't happen to know what junk yard it went to? ;)

J,

I did what I could with the car in terms of scooping whatever I can from it before handing over the ownership to the insurance company. I took all the flashing and parking lights, a jack, all the mats, and the trunk net. I was going to take the front lip with the fog light as well but it was quite damaged! Anyhow, I do not know where they tow the baby to. I should have asked the guy when he was towing it out of the dealer.

The car does handle the roll very well. It save my ass for sure. But the roll wasn't that hard of an impact for the airbags, both side and front, to open. It was still in tact!

Believe it or not but my insurance coverage will not increase!! This is where I was very lucky! In the end, I drove the car for 4 months, put on 13000 clicks and walked away without losing any $$$, well other than my tint job on the car!!!.

When I bought my 99 G - I wanted to get the 2002 rims on my ride, but they told me it "wouldn't pay off", because I had hoped they would buy the 99 stock wheels off me - but they weren't interested, so I said fak em! Best bet is to go to the dealership and inquiry.

Had I knew you're interested in the 2002 G20 rims, I would have stripped those off the Maui Blue one! Oh well....anyone need a cd changer library? I have an extra one :)

I believe the dealerships sell those rims for the same price as aftermarket 17/18's:(

I was just wondering what you did to roll your car but im glad to see you got out OK. Didnt this happen a few months ago too???

This did happened at the end of September 2001, 28th to be exact. I didn't have the chance to develop the pictures to post until now.

I came in on an on-ramp which recommended for 50kph speed. This on-ramp is a complete 360 circle and it is rather tight. I pushed the car to 105kph at 3/4 into the circle. It was dark and I couldn't judge the ramp properly and never had my throttle released. When I got out of the circle and onto the highway, I came to realize that my car was going to jump the curb so I corrected a further bid more. Unfortunately, there were pebbles by the curb and the front wheels skipped and, while with its momentum to go inward, the car then rotated 180 degrees (head becomes rear). If I was quick, in this instant I would hand-break and de-steer that might have saved the situation. But I didn't. So the car continued to travel backward and sideway until it hit the bottom of a hill which supports the bridge above leading to the on-ramp. The car then, slowly as I anticipated, rolled over the hill. Like I said, it wasn't a hard impact for the airbags to deploy. So I left suspended on my seatbelt while my summer tune, Latino music, was playing. GGGGGRRRRRRRR!!

So that was the situation. I didn't have any strut bars or sway bars. These would have saved the situation I suppose!

primera,

I took the occasion to test drive a number of cars: Audi A4, VW 1.8GT, Mercedes C230 Sport Coupe, and Lexus IS300. Knowing how the G20 handles, the price and its package I was comparing it among these. I was also comparing looks and luxury versus dollars.

The A4 handles well with AWD and has neat toys but I was not satisfied with the exterior looks, so that was gone.

The VW 1.8GT, this car is great! It has excellent acceleration and handles corner very well. A true applause but I could not get over with the looks of the car! There were other technical shortfalls but those are a matter of time to get use to them.

The Mercedes C230 was a total waste of time. I think the Mercedes really degrade its name and reputation for bringing this car into the market. I swear, the old man's oar boat runs better than this car!

The Lexus IS300, well what can I say? It's great in all aspects but too expensive for my taste.

My decision was to go with another G20. This car is a charm!

Thats a good selection of models you took for a test run and still picked out the G20...i'm impressed !!!

I'm a bit shocked you passed on the A4 as i thought it may have been your pick out of the lot and maybe the better car.

Good stuff though :) :)

Ahhh, see that's your problem right there. I have a couple rules for my car and one of them is no food or latino music in my car! :D:D

LOL Jason,

It was a good tune!! I agree with no food in the car tho! But come to think about it, the music was loud and I didn't hear the skidding sound from the tire. That would have helped....

primera,

the price difference on the A4 was $12K. I saw no justification to the big price difference and the car, I admit handles well but it looks aweful! Seen those 2002 A4 model? different colours? Yuck!!!

I came close to getting the VW 1.8GT though....but I didn't...
"Gotta love your G", they said :)
