EGR Valve or Idle Control Valve

I have a 2001 Odyssey and have had the following problems. First, when we were driving down the road I could feel the engine wanting to allow the vehicle to surge. So, while we were coasting I put the trans in neutral and the tach would go from 1,000 to 2,000 RPM's and back down to 1,000. It would just repeat this cycle. Also, it was a little dificult to start. Got a check engine light and brought it in. They said it was the idle control valve. After I got the vehicle back, the tach fluctuating problem was fixed but the hard starting was not. When we start the car it can take 10 seconds of cranking until the engine turns over. Finally got a check engine light and they did the EGR service bulletin for us.

QUESTION is, could the EGR problem fix the tach fluctuating problem? I had to pay for the idle control valve ($280) and would like to go back and bitch for my money!!!

You didn't mention how many miles you had on the vehicle when you had this done. The IAC is covered under your original warranty and the EGR update is covered for 80,000 miles or 8 years. The EGR update would NOT have fixed your idle issue. We have run across a lot of the IAC issues in work.

Here is a exerpt from the bulletin pertaining to the EGR issue:

WARRANTY EXTENSION INFORMATION

American Honda is extending the warranty on EGR system problems in the affected vehicles to 8 years or 80,000 miles, whichever comes first.

I also have a 2001 Odyssey and while in park the idle fluctuates between 900 and 1200 rpm. This has just started, but doesn't happen all the time - at least not yet. Could be Idle Control Valve? I'm assuming this was not under warranty with you Honda. I have 53000 miles on my van. Is this ICV a part that can be replaced at home? drjag

In August 2004 I took my 03 odyssey to local Honda delear for a problem with my transmission hunting back and forth between 4th and 5th gear around 35 or 40 mph.

After the tech rode with me and with diagnostic tool hooked up, he determined the EGR valve was sending a faulty signal to a computer thus causing the shifting symptom. They billed me $211.00 to replace the EGR valve which I payed without question since the van has 40000 miles on it and is no longer under warranty.

Then I found this site and saw that emissions equipment is covered for 8 years or 80000 miles.

I called back to the Honda dealership and asked if my van was covered.

After a great deal of research, he informed me that warranty coverage is determined from the vin number. He said mine was not.

He did say that if I was in California, it would be covered! Why do California Honda customers get a better warranty?

Your tech was correct on his diagnosis and also in informing you that it was not covered under warranty.

If Honda has issued the following extended warranty, why would my 2001 Odyssey not be covered? American Honda is extending the warranty on EGR system problems in the affected vehicles to 8 years or 80,000 miles, whichever comes first.

Okay let's start from the first person.

It was a repeat vist. If the part did not fix the problem the first time, the tech should be back flagged and the money for the parts and labor refunded. EVery honda tech knows about the egr problems and with odditys, that is usally one of the first things checked. I don't know if the check engine light was on but if it was and a P1129 was thrown, then there is a S/B that deals with this.

Yes, an IAC can be replaced at home. Or at least for me it is that easy.

Third person, last time i checked i thought all 2003 odditys were under this bulletion, i would have to pull it up.
